I hope Kevin McBride does the business on Saturday. 32 wins (27 by K.O), 4 losses, 1 draw. He’s 6’6 and 260 lbs, the tallest Tyson has fought.
So one website ranks him at 14. I’d say that’s quite high. Go to boxrec.com and see that he’s ranked at 25 there. And don’t talk to me about the WBC. Their rankings are motivated by cash and little else.
The fact is, Tyson is a mediocre heavyweight at best. His skills do not justify his large fan base. The only way to explain the fact that he still has people flocking to see him is that they irrationally think the Tyson of old will somewhow re-emerge or they are drawn by his thuggish personality. Well, Tyson hasn’t beaten a good fighter since he fought Michael Spinks in 1988 (or maybe Razor Ruddock in the early 90’s). The Tyson of old is dead. The fighter calling himself “Mike Tyson” now is merely a shell of his former self, getting along on name recognition and fear instead of skill.
Look at the rappers he hangs out with. Look at his brawling behavior. Look at his fans. That’s where I get it from. Anyone who has followed Tyson’s career over the past ten years or so can see it pretty clearly. Tyson cultivates a ghetto personality and he is rewarded by his ghetto fans.
What rappers? Either way, that means nothing. Not all rappers are thugs. Rappers like P Diddy and Jay-Z hang out with people like Donald Trump and Martha Stewart. They aren’t “ghetto”. His fans are usually white people with money. Who do you think pays to go to his fights? It’s not people from the ghetto. Plus, associating brawling behavior with the ghetto is insulting and inaccurate.
I’m sure Robin Gibbons would have plenty to say about Mike.
I saw snippets of Mike Tyson on television and he seems like a changed man. His voice has even changed. He wasn’t lisping and he had a deeper, more pleasant voice. Maybe he’s playacting in order to put on a good show, but he does seem to have matured quite a bit in my opinion. Not that I plan to watch the bout as I don’t follow boxing, but I wish him well in his future endeavors.
Cinderella Man 2: The Mike Tyson Story?
That’s thanks to the mind control chip in his head. They program different Mike personas and run the .exe to suit his environment. Sadly, it’s all Windows based software, so when it crashes, he defaults back to evil lisping thug Mike-that’s in his bios.
Really? Why don’t you come to D.C. this weekend and see who’s at the MCI Center. I guarantee you that it will be a ghetto fabulous crowd.
I’m sorry. I forgot that the ghetto is so peaceful. The ghetto in D.C. is the most non-violent place in the city.
Wow, lotta responses. Guess that’s one place he still has it.
What I’m interested in more than anything else is his debt situation, which he’s honestly trying to correct. If declaring bankruptcy were an option, why hasn’t he done so already? Even if it’s a highly complicated process which takes a lot of time and paperwork (and I’m certain it is), he definitely should’ve at least asked about it by now.
No question he can get a job, even if it’s a bouncer for some seedy casino. The question is whether he can make a living. Nobody’s gonna do it $40 million on the bad side of solvency.
P.S. He’s still buying houses? There are realtors out there who are that starry-eyed?
Like many sporting events in this area (which I live in), I assure you it will be a majority-white crowd from the suburbs, many undoubtedly hoping to see Tyson do something crazy.
I think the problem is that a the majority of people in “the ghetto” live there because they are poor and have to live there. They despise the violence and as denizens of high-crime area, probably don’t like being lumped in with the violent elements. Unless you believe a majority of the people in ghettos are thug-types who romanticize their neigborhoods. To me those folks are just a hard-to-ignore minority.
Tyson wasted his talent and his chance at greatness. He makes me sick. I do not approve of how he has lived his personal life or treated those professionally who helped him get where he is. He has not acted as a respectful professional.
Having said all that, I will drink a little Tyson KoolAid and say I do not believe that it is 100% certain that Tyson cannot win the championship again. I put the odds at 3 to 1 against which may seem radical in some quarters. Like the footballer who, when asked *What do you need to do to win? *, answered Score more points than the other Team- what Tyson needs to do is fight and win.
That is not as obvious as it sounds. He has only fought 6 times in the last five years (since June 18, 2000) Going 3-2 and 1 NC

Tyson was badly injured at the end of the first round when he lost to Danny Williams last July. (He only fought Williams because McBride – his first choice- wanted too much $$). I am fairly confident Tyson will defeat McBride – he weight at 223 and cut figure seems to imply some training has taken place.
Looking at the Rankings of the Heavyweights – Tyson is 18th – it does not seem impossible to me that A. Tyson can beat McBride and B. ** get a shot at, say, number 3 or 4 Brewster or Toney … and C. ** win that fight.
Should that happen he will get a title shot at Klitchko. I would favor Vitally in that fight but I would take the tone of some (present company excluded) that it is impossible for Tyson to win that fight, that he is so done it is incredible to even imagine it —
In fact, only Tyson’s age – and his lack of fights - rather than his last 5 ring performances, makes me favor Klitchko at all.
Mike Tyson Heavy Weight Champion in 2006-07 ? Successfully defending the title in a re-match and against John Ruiz and Chris Byrd before inexplicably loosing to Tomato Can Unknown? You heard it here first - but he needs to fight (and obviously win)
Vitally in that fight but I would take
should read
Vitally in that fight but I would NOT take
:wally
You were saying, jimmmy?
Well I guess I need to turn in my Nostradamus Club card, eh?
Did anyone see it? The Washington Post says
McBride is fortunate that Tyson decided to quit. Despite out-classing Tyson in five of the six rounds, two judges, Tammye Jenkins and Stephen Rados, still had Tyson leading, 57-55, when the fight was stopped. Judge Paul Artisse had McBride winning by the same score.
Is that true? Could a reasonable person view it as semi-close until Tyson quit - or in 5th when he paniced - or was “the fix” in for Tyson & only a KO of some kind was going to lose it for him?
i haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve only read reports from people who have reason to talk Tyson up.
He did land some good blows (one particularly good left hook) but as soon as the prematch “expected” second round stopage didn’t happen, mcbride was absorbing anything tyson could throw and was hitting back quite well. tyson got away with an attempted headbut, but got caught with his second attempt, a two point penalty after he opened Mcbrides eyebrow with his forehead.
He also tried to break McBrides arm oin the blind side of the referee, Mcbride then landed a few blows and knocked tyson down before the end of hte 6th. tyson didn’t get up for the 7th.
a fair fight. from what I read, I don’t think McBride really showed what he could do, and Tyson just looked like a shell of the fighter he was.
Not having been there last night, but based on my attendance of fights in D.C. in the past, I’d be willing to bet that the crowd breaks down like this: 75% black, 20% Latino, and the rest whatever. It may be a little different for a big fight like this and one with few Latino fighters on it, but I’d say you’d see few white faces in the crowd. You can’t compare boxing crowds to crowds at other sporting events here. Boxing doesn’t draw many white folks and Tyson especially would not draw the Georgetown or Falls Church crowd.
As for the fight, once again Tyson shows that he’s a piece of garbage. Trying to beak McBride’s arm and intentionally headbutting him show Tyson’s true nature. He used to be a talented piece of garbage, but now he doesn’t even have his talent going for him. If he can’t beat McBride, he can’t beat anyone (as he admits). Boxing will be much better off without the freak show.
Yahoo News reports that he is now considering going into missionary work.

Which one of these smilies, on my right, show pathetic?
Tyson’s not finished - he’s still got a bitch-slapping from Stephen Hawking coming to him first.
