English Premier League 2017-18

Coutinho is amazing. Maybe he is worth the £120 mil.

Any Arsenal fans around?

Saw their match Saturday. Its so indicative of Arsenes Arsenal: brilliant first half and nightmare second half.

In other news of not so startling nature:

Leicester City FC have parted ways with their manager, Craig Shakespeare, who was hired temporarily last year in the Ranieri Purge, and then given a “permanent” contract during the summer. Why teams feel the need to “reward” temporary managers for their results in saving the team from disaster I’ll never know. Now, they have much more limited choices for a replacement.

I saw somewhere they were reappointing Ranieri, but didn’t follow the link - was that fake news then?

Ouch. North London 9, Liverpool 3.

Yes, today was a pretty comprehensive dismissal of Mersey-side teams.

In other results from the weekend, the Leicester City FC Foxes managed their first Away win of the season, over equally struggling Swansea City. What I found very interesting was that the first goal came from a Mahrez cross from the left side. I’ve always wished he and Albrighton would switch up more often to take advantage of bad matchups. Perhaps the interim manager agrees.

It was also agreeable to see the lovely deft touch by Mahrez that led to Okazaki’s tap-in goal. Mahrez has such incredible touch. It’s a shame he gets so easily put out of sorts by being double-teamed. :frowning:

As for United, let’s just say that was a pretty dispirited display they gave. Lots of teams showed far more commitment to play than they did, some of them losing sides.

Spurs are heading into a gauntlet of games, but so far have done extremely well. Winning over Liverpool is huge. They haven’t managed that since Bale was still on the team. I think that the draw against Real Madrid had a lot to do with it. They came out ferociously and dominated. Their next 6 games are:

West Ham
United
Palace
Real
Arsenal
BvB

That’s 3 derbies, a title challenger and two of the best teams in the Champions League (with Real maybe being the best club side in the world right now, maybe).

If Spurs come through this strong they will be unstoppable. Once again it may have taken too long. Maybe City is too big a force the was Chelsea were last year. But damn, this is a fun team.

Lovren got thrown under the bus by Klopp. Subbed after 30 minutes and trashed in the press. Even though he has to take pain meds before each match because of a leg injury.

Liverpool…you will never walk alone but you will always sleep alone.

Well, this morning, the top six are the top six. Doesn’t look like it’s going to be an abnormal year.

In other news, Claude Puel didn’t take long to shake-up Leicester City. The lineup was noticeably different from the “normal” lineup of the last three years. And the result was a 2-0 win over the Toffees. Hopefully, a sign of things to come!

They were the beneficiaries of horrible reffing (including an obvious missed PK call), a weirdly comic OG and were completely dominated in the second half; but they did get the win.

I wouldn’t get too excited over beating a poor, managerless Everton team at home!

Hey,I got excited over the fact we dumped second-division Leeds Utd. out of the League Cup at home midweek!

Heh - not as excited as I got about Bristol City drawing Manchester United at home in the quarter finals - my two favourite teams. Would be amazing to get tickets for the game but the whole city is thinking the same way so it’s unlikely.

Tottenham 3-1 Real Madrid. That actually happened.

I wasn’t sure if I should say anything. But this was an amazing game!

Spurs are definitely showing they deserve to be considered one of the big boys this year.

Note that the five Premier League teams are currently first or second in their groups; indeed, four of them are leading their groups. English footie going strong!

It’s an exciting time to be a fan of the Premier League. Lots of talent, lots of good managers (lots of money). And nearly half the teams in the league are genuinely in contention for major honors, either a top 4 finish, winning the league, Champions league, FA Cup, whatever. I like the relative parity within the league and the strength being shown outside it.

Yay English Football.

…and I was there

My Champions League record this season is 3-1 Tottenham and 3-1 Tottenham.

Ahead of the NLD the Guardian published a great article about Arsenal and Tottenham.
