No love for Vincent and the boys?

Drama still getting no respect, Turtle still mooching off E, Ari splitting Vincent from his now hottie agent, and the Escobar role dangling out there…

I loved Turtle Ho’ing out the party to a series of product placements… was anyone else surprised that no-one jumped out of the birthday cake?

This is gonna be a good season.

I missed the first 8 minutes or so, but I enjoyed it. I don’t think Vince is going back to Ari. I see therir relationship taking a darker turn (not violent, but Ari trying to sabotage Vince’s career).

I love the new agent- Carla Gugino is a hottie. I don’t see Vince going back to Ari though, unless he somehow manages to pull Medellin out of the fire. (On the other hand, Gugino’s only signed on for 3 eps, so Ari may win out pretty soon.) It seemed pretty certain that Del Toro had signed on and the door had closed on it, and Ari’s ploy of sending him the leatherbound script was a cheap, empty promise with nothing behind it except for Ari’s shameless hucksterism.

I was hoping to see a plot twist such as Vince not being able to land anything and Drama’s career taking off, so that they were dependant on him for a while. But it doesn’t look like it’s going in that direction.

I hate that it’s a 30 minute show- it always ends just as I’m sinking my teeth in.

I loved the season intro! I’m excited to see where they go this season.

I will request we spoiler knowledge of how long actors or actresses are signed on for since I didn’t know that and while it is not an explicit spoiler, it does hint strongly at a certain turn of the future.

Really? They are playing up Drama being invisible too much for his career not to take off. I’ve thought right from the first few episodes that the series will end and with Vince being in Drama’s entourage.

I can’t believe Ari doesn’t have some reason to think Medellin is available… wouldn’t he just be shooting himself in the foot to offer something like that up and not be able to deliver? He’s not a stupid man, certainly.

Vince certainly doesn’t seem like the Edith Wharton type.

Sorry about the lack of spoiler- I sincerely didn’t think it was a big deal. I went to imdb only to make sure I spelled Carla’s name properly, and it’s right there at the top of her filmography. I wasn’t even looking for it.

Point taken, though.

It’s not a big deal, but just out of courtesy for others I wanted to make that request

She is, but I thought she was horrible in this role. As the episode went on I was so not buying her as a high powered agent.

The characters on this show have such a weird, fantasy lifestyle. Like in the first few seasons, Vince was the only one who was making any money, and the others were purely sponging off him. Now they’re making their own money (E through his management fees, Turtle through the rap artist he represented and Drama from acting here and there) but it wasn’t clear to me that the three of them could afford to spend $50,000 or so on Vince’s birthday party.

Someone said in a previous thread (and it’s been said other places as well) that the show is the male equivalent of Sex and the City, and that’s absolutely true. It was never clear on that show how those women could afford all those bar tabs and expensive shoes, and on this show it’s not clear how these boys support their lifestyle.

But I love the show, partly because of the vicarious pleasure I get from watching them. (BTW, I think that the Ed Burns’ series Five Towns in which Drama was appearing was modeled after the Black Donnellys. Even the billboard looked familiar.)

They’re all still sponging off Vince, since they all live in his house. At least Drama is getting some work now. IIRC, Turtle’s rapper abandoned him for a Suge Knight type of character, who gave Turtle a one-time payoff to go away.

Doesn’t Vince essentially pay all of them to be at his beck and call all the time too? I thought he paid Turtle to drive, Drama to cook (I’d love to have one of his breakfasts!), and E to be his manager.

On Sex and the City, Miranda was a lawyer, Carrie had a newspaper column, Charlotte worked at an Art Gallery and Samantha was a successful publicist.

Of the women from Sex and the City, Miranda and Samantha were the most successful. I can’t imagine that Carrie’s weekly newspaper column paid very well, nor Charlotte’s art gallery job (although she looked like a trust fund baby to me).

And on Entourage, I think last season E insisted that they change the manager relationship to a professional one, so that he’s now getting ten percent (or whatever the rate is), but prior to that wasn’t he unpaid? Turtle’s been the biggest sponge and quite unapologetic about it, but he did do a nice job of turning the birthday party into a money maker and he was starting to get somewhere with the rapper. Perhaps he has a future in promotion?

I think that was the big cliffhanger at the end of season 1. Eric went from getting a small salary to a proper percentage. (But didn’t Ari also get a percentage? I never understood the point of having a manager and an agent at the same time. He’s also got a publicist and a business manager that appeared once.)

Turtle may be a sponge (though I think Vince does pay him a small amount to drive) but he’s a damn loyal sponge. He loves Vince and always comes through for him. In his own Turtle way, of course.

Props to Turtle for getting a big sponsor to host the event. I also half-expected Tyra Banks to pop out of the cake after they blew out the candles, phungi.

I liked Gangster Octopus’ idea of Ari taking out all the stops to try and screw with Vince … not to the point of sabotaging his career, perhaps, but definitely throwing some obstacles in his path. If Gugino really is only in this for a brief encounter, then maybe Ari won’t have to get all sneaky.

And is it just me or does the whole crew look better than ever? Turtle looks slimmer and they’ve all gotten some sun, I think. My sister stumbled across Kevin Connelly at a club in L.A. a few weeks back and she barely cared. If I were there, I’d have said hi and told him a bunch of stuff he’s already heard about how great the show is, but he’s barely a blip on her radar and she probably wouldn’t try to say hi even if he were. Her loss. Kevin rocks … E is my favorite character and he’s got the best hair. Yeah, it’s probably fruity for a guy to fixate on another dude’s hairstyle, but I wanna get my hair trimmed like his. Looks damn sharp.

I have no idea why man, but your post is probably my favorite of the day.

I liked the awkwardness from Ari and Vince. However, I hoped it would be a more subtle “break-up awkwardness” instead of the flat out metaphors from Drama. It was still enjoyable and it was fun how they were so gay for each other.

I know Ari is a lying, scheming, great agent but I always liked to think of him as an actual friend to Vince. More than just a “discovery” for Ari and more than just a first agent for Vince. He was one of the guys. I hope they get back together.

Good episode, but coulda used more Sloan.

If you ask people in the business about the difference between an Agent and a Manager, you won’t get a very clear answer. It kind of breaks down like this- Agents handle arranging work, paperwork, contracts. Managers hustle you work and do more “street level” negotiation.

Seems like Ari is a liaison with directors and producers, getting scripts for Vince and negotiating jobs. He has that huge office at his disposal for generating contracts, dealing with paperwork, etc. E manages the details of Vince’s life, like appearances, coordinating his household, making decisions about more personal stuff. No idea if that’s how the agent/manager breakdown is for real celebrities.

I still like Vince the best of all the characters. He really hasn’t changed since the beginning of the show; still the smooth, cool guy who is unsurprised by his popularity but unspoiled by it. Still loves his boys. Hope he gets Medellin this season, though I think Benicio would be a better choice if I were casting it.
