I saw the Attack of the Clones trailer tonight on TV and was surprised by the low quality of special effects. Many of the clips shown were very obviously blue-screened, more so than any big budget movie in recent memory. The lighting on the actors didn’t match the CGI backgrounds at all. From what I’ve seen, the special effects were much better in Episode I.
I read through the scene by scene description at … theforce.net or something like that. I was surprised by how much they gave away. Reading through it was like reading the movie script itself.
Was not surprised at all that they played up the action and didn’t mention the love affair at all.
Can’t say as I have to much to complain about for the CG. Although I do think that the missile shooting out of Slave I and the shot of Amidala fires a blaster could have been better. Everything else seemed fine.
And as always a note on royalty ogling. Amidala looked incredibly fetching in the white jumpsuit. And it looks like it gets ripped up a bit too. Do away with the blood and ooh!
I’ve noticed that Lucas is really big about repeating things. And I noticed that we once again have a hero in white on a retracted bridge in great danger.
I’ve seen the trailers numerous times, at relatively high-quality. Sure, some of the scenes you can tell are CG, but I think that’s only because we’ve become accustomed to spotting CG when we see it. I would put it up there with some of the best CG graphics, although not the best.
However, from what I’ve seen, I wouldn’t call the CG annoyingly bad, either. Just noticeable, if you’re looking for it.
Go back and watch the trailers for TPM, and then watch the film; especially the opening scene in the teaser trailer (the creatures walking out of the mist on Naboo). The effects weren’t complete when the trailer was done, and by the time the film came out, they were complete and looked 1000x times better.
I’m sure ILM hasn’t finished the effects for AotC, and in May we’ll see how things will really look. But, I noticed the same “problem” watching the new trailer on the web this morning.
Yeah, I agree with the last comment. The effects are almost certainly incomplete in the trailer.
Although it is a bold move to make a film in the style George Lucas has chosen to - ILM do seem to be the absolute best at such things. I say we trust 'em…at least until the film comes out.
Best part of the preview: no Jar Jar. Can I dare to dream that this means he will not actually be in the movie? Or will be disposed of within the first five minutes or something?
Sorry, Jar Jar will still be there, although I’ve heard he will be shoved well into the background. He’s now an ambassador or something from the Gungans of Naboo. If you want a glimpse of him wearing long robes and trying to look statesmanlike, go to http://www.apple.com/trailers/ and play the “Forbidden Love” trailer for Episode II. In the very second shot of the movie, you’ll see him at the far left of the screen, to Obi-Wan’s right.
Well, you have to admit it looks as if this one has what Phantom lacked…
A plot. TPM had lots of scenes, lots of events… which seemed to take place in an odd, stately isolation from each other. The chariot race was a heck of a ride, but it really didn’t seem connected to the rest of the movie. Nor did the Coruscant scenes. There was no sense of time pressure, really.
I think the new (old) helmets for the Storm troopers look goofy. And the Proto-walkers and Proto-Star Destroyers are also goofy-looking. But if they looked better than the sequals, something would be wrong, so i except goofiness.
Flame me all you want, but I am excited about AOTC. Seeing the trailer on the tube last night only made me want to see it that much more.
I commented to my wife about the proto-stormtrooper outfits and the proto-ATAT’s. It only increases my appreciation of the original triology seeing how items in those movies came to be. Of course, I hold no notions that Lucas or anyone had the whole evolution in mind when they wrote the first Star Wars but I am glad they are making a great effort to create a back story that fits into the “Star Wars Universe”.
I was almost all set to completely avoid AotC after the Forbidden Love trailer, but the new one looked pretty good. Lots of impressive looking scenes, especially that big battle in the desert. The thing that I’m really worried about now is that it’s going to be geared too much towards the short attention span crowd, with everything happening too fast too be absorbed. I guess we shall see.
I actually liked the designs for the “new” Star Destroyers. I thought it was a nice transition in feel between the curvy, uber-dildo look of the machines in the Phantom Menace and the blocky triangular look of the original trilogy.
As for the CGI looking “low quality,” I’d just have to say that even if the movie were released right now, before the final buffing up and polishing that ILM will give undoubtedly give it, it would still look very, very good.
I thought there were far too much CGI in the climactic scene. Like the space battle in TPM: too much things zipping around to get a full appreciation of what’s going on.
I loved the Death Star battle in the first Star Wars, and the Hoth battle, they didn’t try to overwhelm your senses and gave you a good idea of the strategy and action.
Now, it’s like watching strobe lights. And Lucas saying “ooooh, look what I can do with the SPFX!”.
Well, I’m one out of the original 43 of us who really liked the Phantom Menace, Jar-Jar and all, I thought the trailer was fine.
Granted, you can’t judge a film by its preview and the big screen will play this out a bit more than what I got with my crappy old sixteen inch picture box, I was far from disappointed.
Looks like Samuel L. Jackson’s role is more developed as was hinted to earlier. Also I thought they struck the right balance of not giving toooo much away while stoking the interests of those of us who knew long ago where we would be this May 16th.
