ER 5/7 (unboxed spoilers)

Yes, that happened to a woman at my church just last summer. She was much farther along, about 8 months, I think, and her water broke. When they got to the hospital and did an ultrasound they found out the baby had died in utero. :frowning:
She delivered naturally, and they named him and had a funeral. She got pregnant again right away and is due pretty soon.

I also was confused by Abby and Kerry conversation - was Abby sort of threatening Kerry, requesting a match somehow?

And yes, Michael Gross has always played Carter’s father.

Chefguy, I wondered about that Mustang GTO. I wonder what they look like.

It was pretty heartbreaking. John told Kem that he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He repeated that they had to leave the room and they would never see their baby again. He was crying, and said that he needed to help her, but didn’t know how to help her. He asked her to help him, to help her. She slightly nodded her head, he nodded his head. He stood up and walked over to the baby, picked him up. Kem sat up in bed. John handed her the baby, put his arms around them both and held them as Kem completely broke down.

I cried.

I think the baby was left in the room in the hopes that the mother would want to hold him and say goodbye. The OB doctor seemed pretty convinced that saying goodbye to the baby was a huge step in the healing process.

:smack:

I knew that. Really. I did.

Thanks for the clarification anyway. (My mom’s an RN – I should know some of this.)

If I was directing the show, I would have done a couple of things differently, re: Carter.

When they first found out that the baby was dead, I would have had a newborn crying in the background…and told them to react silently with a sudden sense of finality and loss. Maybe make eye contact and then slump a little.

And when Carter left the room I would have had a camera POV shot looking into a room with happy people clustered around a new mom holding her baby.

No, Kerry was trying to weasel information out of Abby so she could screw her over, information that she’s explicitly forbidden to ask for. Basically, Abby told her to knock it off or she’d report her for violating the rules of the match.

To clarify a bit, there’s very much a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy about the Match. Both programs and candidates are barred from volunteering or requesting specific information about ranking choices to one another. Dr.J’s program was able to tell him that odds were decent he’d be matched here if it was his first choice, but that’s as specific as it can get. Kerry’s already riding the line (if not crossing it) by saying that Abby’s in their top 20 candidates. By trying get Abby to tell her whether or not she’d ranked County first choice, she was all the way into the next zip code from the line.

Basically, what Kerry was saying was this: if Abby fails the boards again and can’t start her residency on time, whatever program gets her is going to be shortstaffed, at least until she passes. Since County has ranked Abby fairly highly, if it’s her first choice, she’s probably going to match there. This would lead to Kerry’s program being shorthanded, and she doesn’t want that. If, however, Kerry were to remove Abby from their ranking list, which I don’t think she could do at that point, Abby would get sent somewhere else and be somebody else’s problem. Of course, if Abby didn’t rank them number one, it’s not Kerry’s problem anyway and she doesn’t have to go to the effort of changing her list. In other words, “Bend over and hand me that Vaseline so it’ll be easier to screw you, would ya?”

Abby’s reply was that if Kerry were to strike her from the match list at this late date because of the boards thing, she’d have to report Kerry for direct violation of the rules of the Match.

I asked Ivylad about that, and he just snorted in derision. I think it was supposed to be Mustang GT.

ER started late because the last Friends ran a couple minutes over.

In a way, we sort of did have both those things. At one point when Carter left the room (I think to get some coffee at the vending machine) the sound of a child crying could be heard in another room on the wing. And I’d probably consider the happy dad as something parallel to the new mom holding her baby.

Many thanks for the explanation of the conversation between Abby and Kerry.

The shot of Steve, Sam, and Alex standing at the graduation and Steve putting his arm possessively around Sam while staring directly at Luka was rather chilling. Nothing good will come of this.

They’ve been teasing us with the gunshot sound in the commercials for weeks now. Mere speculation, rather than a spoiler, but to be safe…

…at first I thought maybe one of Abby’s mental patients was going to go crazy and bring a gun to therapy. But now it looks like they’re setting it up to be Sam’s ex instead.

Nope…my guess:

Sam’s kid catches his father smaking Sam around, and shoots him with his father’s gun, killing the father

Why couldn’t/wouldn’t they do a D&X or D&E ?

My guess on the gunshot tease:

In a cliffhanger whodunit, Maggie shoots Mr. Burns.

And I’m shocked no one mentioned the most hilarious part of the show…

The naked ass of the obese elderly man… not once, but twice.

And Neela’s smooth handling of his sudden appearance in front of her 19 family members.
