It’s weird reading 20 year old posts and thinking that they happened just the other day. And also missing folks I haven’t heard from (and in some cases, seen) for such a long time.
Actually, he tragically passed away two years before the song gained widespread popularity. He was famous locally in Hawaii, but never knew the worldwide fame the song brought him. It’s a sad story. His whole family was very large and they all died young, like late 30s early 40s, and he was well aware that was likely his fate as well. He was just 38 when he died.
Oh, shoot, I didn’t realize he’d died before the ER episode. So sad!
