I believe Kerry ended up in management when Romano got his arm lopped off. He was on leave for so long, they just promoted her… I think.

Well, back in the day, she was named Chief Resident–much to the dismay of the other doctors, nurses and staff. She held that position (losing out on Resident of the Year to Benton) until she was named Attending (can’t remember when that happened).
After ER Chief Morgenstern (sp) (William Macy) left (he had a heart attack and wasn’t up to the job when he returned), she was named Acting Chief of the Emergency Department (or something like it). She worked in this capacity for some time, though was dismayed when County held a nation-wide search for a new ER chief. That brings us to Season 5 (?) and the whole “Amanda Lee” debacle. Christ, what a stupid storyline.
(Amanda Lee had so many issues that she needed a subscription (mental illness, faking identities, etc.) and finally flipped out in CT one day with Mark Greene. So, she’s out of there, and Kerry (I think) steps in again.)
Kerry finally quit in disgust one day and had Anspaugh (sp) fill in until a replacement could be found. That was Romano (?), who was acting as both Chief of Staff and ER Chief (precendent set by MOrgenstern who also held both positions). Romano eventually makes Kerry ER Chief.
When Romano has his accident, his privledges are curtailed and he eventualy loses his ER Chief status. Enter Kerry, cue music, end scene.
(Please feel free to correct me–I’m working off of memories from past seasons.)
Thanks, bibiocat, dogzilla, and zhen’ka (particularly for bringing up the Amanda Lee debacle!). That question was bobbing around in my head a bit, and it didn’t seem that we were going to see enough of Kerry for me to sort it out on my own.
