"Est"

This Scientology thread has got me reminiscing about an article I read years ago. I just barely remember the jist of it, but apparently back in the 70’s in Hollywood there was a prominent movement I believe was called “Est”. I’m not sure if this stood for something, but ostensibly it was a therapy/support group, but beyond that the “engrams” must be clouding my memory. A google search doesn’t turn up much since these are common initials and I could search all day. Anyone have further info?

Shortly after posting my initial inquiry, I continued my search and came up with this link:

http://skepdic.com/est.html

Anyone care to elaborate?

I don’t know much. I met some people who were involved in Landmark Forum which is the current incarnation of Est. Werner Erhart was the founder of Est I don’t know if he was directly involved with the Forum or not. I believe he is or was wanted for various crimes, but I don’t know details.
The couple was floudering, financially. He was a dot com has-been and she spent money and complained about not being rich anymore. They live in a 24,000 sq ft home in an upscale neighborhood, which is paid for.
The give every extra penny to the Forum and volunteer vast amounts of time there. They are mandated to bring in new people. It seems one of them told me they are fined if they don’t bring so many possible new members over a given time.
It seems to be a quasi-religion, with money as a Godhead.
They are very persistent, but not very convincing as they both whine and complain about how awful life is. (now that they’re poor.)
I think the concept is to make one feel a part of something. I was and am very skeptical.
I don’t think I’ve been much help.

est stood for Erhard Seminars Training, after its founder, Werner Erhard. They did seminars/training that ran for two weekends, and were infamous for limiting bathroom breaks. It was standard self-help stuff (you create your own experience, etc.), presented through lectures, guided meditations, etc.

I did the training around '76, IIRC – I’ll be happy to answer any specific questions you have – if I remember the answers, this is a hell of a long time ago.
