Occasionally I think I have a handle on how weird people can be, then I read something like this. Not just that there are fakers, but that it’s common.
When I was pregnant ten years ago (holy shït) someone was faking a pregnancy on our board. She claimed she was inseminated with late husbands sperm and was having twins.
Her baby bump got bigger and smaller.
Then she posted a pic of her ultrasound but forgot to edit out the info at the top.
She copied it directly from the about.com twins site.
I think some people had sent her money too.
Not banned, but sent to Coventry for being to pro-vaxx on another messageboard.
:shrugs: It was amusing for a while to post there, but then it just got kind of sad, and I fired off too many one-liners, and bang.
Regards,
Shodan
Does Live Jasmine count as a forum, cause I’ve been kicked off there plenty of times.
Ok, I’m officially curious. Why would you do that? What do you get out of it?
I won’t answer for etv78, but here’s the thread he started here on the subject of his trolling.
I recall that upset members of the boards he trolled showed up here to give him shit for it.
Yep, here’s the post/thread where another board’s mod came in to fight with etv, and here’s a resulting ATMB thread on the whole affair.
Please note that I’m only posting these links as cites to above posts, and I’m not trying to start a whole thing with etv here.
Someone on another board started a sock puppet account stating that they had died, and this was a young woman who still lived with her parents, who started questioning all the cards that arrived at her house. She was banned for pulling a stunt like that.
Someone else on this same board posted a suicide threat, and long story made short: Within a half hour, a police officer was knocking on her door. She spent a few days in the hospital as a result, and later came back to thank us. She hadn’t realized that people really did care about her. The post and thread were deleted in the meantime.
MotheringDotCommune is the world HQ of extremist parenting practices. These are the sort of people who think you’re a bad mother if mention that you dared to stop nursing your baby after two years and used a stroller rather than carry your thirty-five pound toddler. They like to argue that unassisted home birthing of triplets is not only a good idea but the very height of potential human experiences.
I spent three days in their notorious anti-vax forum arguing that vaccines are better than being paralyzed from polio or going deaf from measles or sterile from mumps before being banned. The only shock was lasting that long. And the twenty private messages telling me to keep at it.
I was a secret moderator on a sports forum. That is, I had a moderator identity that was separate from my ordinary member identity. Only the admins knew. One day I got snappish on some guy who posted about medications and was blowing smoke. The admin contacted me and had me issue a warning to myself in my secret moderator identity to my ordinary member identity.
As I posted here before I got thrown out of a traffic signal collectors board for suggesting in my opening post that having everything locked down and super-secret and difficult to join wasn’t going to encourage newcomers like me to the hobby. The fact that I would get banned for something like that, which wasn’t against any posted rules, kind of proved my point about how unwelcoming to outsiders they were. One of the members who made friends with me through multiple eBay deals and emails and even phone calls was going to try to reason with the site owner, but both of them were busy so they never did connect with each other. After a year the site owner shut it down so everyone else formed a new board, which I joined.
As far as board trolls, I was active on a self-injury support board for a number of years. The legendary troll there was Prema, a lesbian who had rather dramatic life including multiple suicide attempts, Stage III cancer, won a six figure sum taking her parents to court for sexual abuse, multiple court commitments, and wound up marrying her 16 year old girlfriend who was also on the board. Eventually people grew suspicious about how fast she’d always bounce back, and finally traced both Prema and her wife to a middle aged man.
That place was anal as hell. I got kicked off there for defending someone in an argument. They’d kick you out for signing your posts, you name it.
I was banned from posting comments on the Aint-It-Cool-News site, though I never found out precisely why as they wouldn’t answer my emails. I had commented on a post about the death of a long-retired celebrity (saying something like “she hadn’t contributed anything to the entertainment industry in 30 years, and had lived a long life - is it really a tragic loss?”), and I guess what I said started some kind of minor comment fight or something, and everyone involved, including me, were banned. That’s my best guess, but all the comments were deleted before I returned to the site, so I never saw went down.
I arguably deserved it, but I wish I knew what had actually happened. It also was no great loss to be unable to contribute to such a poorly run site.
I never got banned, but I did stop visiting Television Without Pity because I knew they would find some stupid reason to ban me if I posted on there. I don’t understand why they have to be so petty and controlling over there.
Especially over something as trivial as TV shows.
I got suspended from a message board for making a mildly sexual reference to Kari Byron of Mythbusters. It was only then that I found out that two of the mods were close personal friends of the cast and that Adam Savage was known to visit the board. Oops.
That’s hilarious! You must have been beside yourself!
Isn’t Kari the blonde/redhead chick?
Yeah. I can’t even remember what I wrote, and it was joking in nature, but next thing I knew I was suspended and my post was censored. The thread derailed into a “whoa, what did he say?”. They let me come back two weeks later though.
My husband just showed me pics from her sexy calendar. She doesn’t like people thinking of her sexually? Really.
I think there was a bit of white knighting going on…
