Ever heard the band 'Taking Back Sunday'?

I really like the song ‘There’s no ‘I’ in Team’ by Taking Back Sunday. I’ve been looking for similar songs or bands. Anybody got any recommendations?

The “standard” recommendation would be a band called Thursday which is very similar and in my opinion, slightly better. Check out “Understanding in a Car Crash” and “Paris in Flames.”

If Taking Back Sunday is your first exposure to emo/pop-punk there are a host of other bands you won’t find on the radio but are similar.

I’ll go ahead and add a general recommendation for Sunny Day Real Estate. Try the songs “Seven” and “8” (easy to remember).

I haven’t heard their stuff, but a lot of people who like them also like All American Rejects. Their new album has gotten really good reviews, and is sort of pop-punk.

I’d second the recomindation for Thursday

I’ll go ahead and toss out a few more bands. The way I understand it The Alkaline Trio and At the Drive-In are also similar. I don’t really listen to either of those bands though.

For a slightly poppier sound you may try Braid. They are a few years old and now broken up, but they sort of employed a screamer guy too. I like “The New Nathan Detroits” and “A Dozen Roses.”

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I’ve been listening to Sunny Day Real Estate and At the Drive-In for a while now, both excellent bands. I’m not a big fan of All American Rejects or anything on MTV though :p. If anyone suggests Dashboard Confession to me they get a kick to the balls, no questions asked (TeeHee!).

I’m looking for the whole ‘singing and screaming’ type music. I liked some stuff from Shadows Fall and Cave In, for example. Pop music is good too if done well. I just happened to like that particular song from Taking Back Sunday alot. I’m gonna go check out some stuff from Thursday now.

P.S. MTV = crap. Radio = crap

Thrice.

Later AFI.

Cursive.

I’ve never listened to TBS–they don’t have the greatest reputations in the circles I tend to hand around in–but the bands listed above fit the ‘singing and screaming’ description and are pretty melodic, too.

I get to see Cursive and The Appleseed Cast this week. More than once if I so desire. I am psyched.

And I have to agree with Tanaqui, I’d consider both Taking Back Sunday and Thursday to be borderline “MTV bands.” I think it comes from the fact that the took a sound that had been around for a while, polished it, made it more radio-friendly and released it to the mainstream. The loyalists who were around from the beginning rarely like it when their sound goes mainstream.

I can understand why the loyalist don’t like bands that enter the mainstream but I personally could go either way. I don’t want to get into that whole debate anyways, it seems pointless to me. All I can say is, if it sounds good, I like it :). I listened to some songs from Thursday and it’s sounded good so far.

I remember seeing Appleseed at a show long ago with Planes Mistaken for Stars. I didn’t really like them much, it just seemed like there was something missing to me. Oh well, to each their own.

So, any other bands you would recommended?

Since they were playing with Planes Mistaken for Stars, it is likely that you saw them before they got Cobra, the drummer. They changed quite a bit when he joined up. The Appleseed Cast isn’t hardcore though, more melodic rock, so that could be a source of your opinion.

If you listen to Deep Elm bands, I’d recommend Red Animal War for harder core guitar driven rock. “Jambalaya” and “Mouse” are common favorites. They are fun live.

Since you listen to SDRE, I have to make sure you know about The Fire Theft, Sunny Day’s newest incarnation. It sounds more like The Rising Tide than it does Diary. Those guys just make good music.

Thanks for all the info Tertius01. I had no idea about The Fire Theft. I’m gonna have to check it out tomorrow though, it’s time for bed now.

What are some songs from Appleseed with Cobra? I’m willing to give it a chance at least. Maybe I’ll like this new stuff more then last time.

I should add I’m just looking for recommendations for good bands and Taking Back Sunday seemed like a good place to start. I’m not really concerned with what label their on, what classification they fall into, etc etc. All I know is I have no exposure to anything different. Radio and TV are worthless when it comes to listening for new stuff.

No Viacom, I do not want to listen to eminem. No MTV, I do not want to listen to ANY rap at all. Rap sucks.

The Appleseed Cast’s albums tend to flow together as one musical work. Mare Vitalis is a more traditional melodic rock album. I really like the song “Santa Maria” from that album. The also released Low Level Owl, a two CD work that is basically one continuous piece of music. The tracks more or less alternate between lyrical and instrumental. It was considered pretty experimental and received comparisons to Radiohead (later stuff). It has a more laid back sound that what you usually hear from Radiohead. “Steps and Numbers” and “Rooms and Gardens” stand out. LLO is great to fall asleep to because it has a certain meandering ethereal quality to it. To give you an idea what I mean, “Doors Lead to Questions” is a three minute instrumental that is based on a drum part recorded in a basement (it gives it a hollow sort of sound). They basically loop the simple drum part over and over, and then they start layering it with the drum part looped backward. Add in a little organ, piano and guitar and you have an interesting relaxing track.

It isn’t hardcore music by any stretch, but it does have a lot of interesting complexity. I can almost guarentee they won’t be on the radio anytime soon, even though their music is well produced and leagues more interesting than anything you hear today.

OK, have you heard The Music? Pretty good screaming vocals. Great driving music (if you don’t mind speeding tickets) I have no idea what’s on MTv, so there ya’ go.

Good Recommendations so far. I’ll toss in Finch, Senses Fail, and Boy Sets Fire. Finch is just starting to get the recognition they deserve.

I don’t know if I’d agree that Thursday released their music to the mainstream. It’s not their fault they got picked up by MTV2 for a minute. For that matter, it’s not Chris Carraba’s fault that MTV decided he was to be the posterboy for their new emo vibe. It is his fault, of course, that he’s a pathetic no-talent wanker.

I just got turned on to Fire Theft and they are excellent.

I also need to second the Cursive recommendation. One of my favorite bands, definitely (and you cannot go wrong with anything from Saddle Creek). Cave In are also good, but if you like the screamo stuff you’ll want to check out their older material, they’ve gotten a lot smoother as they’ve aged.

I love (love love) Braid. If you like them, check out their new band Hey Mercedes, which slants even further toward the pop end of the spectrum.

A great, great screamo/punk/pop-punk band is Recover (from Fueled by Ramen). Definitely give them a look.

Alkaline Trio is less screamo and more pop punk (and more pop than punk, at least in terms of the music alone).

My personal fave: Piebald. Their older stuff is excellent screamo, though they’ve come all the way across to making a pretty much mainstream rock sound with their last album. Check them out though. Get the albums When Life Hands You Lemons (from Hydra Head, if they’ve still got it) and If it Weren’t For Venetian Blinds it’d be Curtains For Us All (on Big Wheel Rec I think) and call me in the morning.

I forgot to mention that these are my 2nd and 3rd favorite Thursday songs, to “I am The Killer.”
Also: Do NOT fail to check out The Desaparecidos.

Actually my favorite Thursday song is “Concealer,” a song about child abuse.

“The cadence beats down on the tar
It sounds the same as your fists raining down”

I love that part.

Oh and the reason I think Chris Carraba is a wanker is because he basically ditched a band I liked in Further Seems Forever to peddle his whiny heartaches to a junior high singalong. Having a real band backing him up seemed to temper the excesses of his vocals and lyrics. That being said, I like “The Swiss Army Romance” and he does a good cover of Weezer’s “Jamie.” Further Seems Forever is good pop rock, and I am glad they made another record.

I’d be more helpful with more archaic stuff, but I accidently deleted my stash of random mp3s. It is taking a while to reform the collection (am I allowed to say that here?).

I suppose this is as appropriate a place as any to make a music related request. I am looking for a band with melodic female lead vocals and a hardcore male screamer. It seems like it might be an interesting blend. The closest I’ve found is a group called Cast Aside (“Racecar Theory”) where both the guy and the girl start screaming. I’ve heard mention of Rainer Maria but have yet to check them out. Any other suggestions?

Are you serious? Dashboard’s “Jamie” is absolutely the worst thing I’ve heard him do. I despise it. Ugh.

I agree with you about FSF, though. Completely.

Nothing I’ve heard from Rainer Maria has involved screaming, that I can recall. I’ve always thought of them as being more… sort of avante-garde beats-y pop rock. Like This Busy Monster or early Dismemberment Plan, except with a girl singer. Very PNW, which isn’t at all the vibe you’re talking about.

Hmm… A lot of early Modest Mouse incorporated female backing vocals as well as some of Isaac Brock screaming. That doesn’t quite fit the bill though. I’ll see if I can think of anything else.

Tons of stuff for me to check out. I’m gonna have to go through each post one by one. My tastes seem to run close to Tertius01’s (Further Seems Forever kicks ass!) so I’ll have to listen to those bands he recommended first. Your idea about ‘melodic female lead vocals and a hardcore male screamer’ seems like it would sound very good.

A friend of my introduced me to emo a while back. I must say I liked it :). Ever since then I’ve been on the look out for new bands. If I see a name that interests me on the net I’ll d/l a few songs. That’s how I ended up buying Further Seems Forever and Boy Sets Fire. I discovered this board recently and thought I’ll see what other people are listening to on here.
