Now that some time went by, yeah, probably harmless. You didn’t know that beforehand.
What country and why is lactose intolerance something relevant? Do you believe drinking the milk unpasteurized allowed those with lactose intolerance to do so without issues?
Right–or more precisely, not just a discussion about milk.
What about Facebook?
I’m with you there. And that despite the fact that although I never would have predicted it, I did become a fan of So You Think You Can Dance for three or four seasons after my wife roped me into it. But that seems a little more serious/legitimate. Oh well, de gustibus. I suppose DWTS is not really supposed to be taken seriously, or they wouldn’t have the ridiculous celebrities they do.
Wow, our fridges sound like identical twins! I wonder, are you and the other big milk/dairy users predominantly of Northern European ancestry like I am?
Oh yeah, your post of the one after yours reminds me of those Got Milk? Commercials. You people who don’t drink glasses of milk are seriously immune to the need for a glass if you have a brownie or a chocolate chip cookie? That is unthinkable to me and why I thought those were some of the most genius commercials ever.
I’m very far from a luddite but social media in general leaves me cold. It is so all-pervasive but I’ve never been tempted as I never saw a need for it at the beginning and the bigger it gets the greater the disincentive for me.
But as a family we probably get though 10 litres of full-fat milk a week. That grey, insipid low-fat stuff can kiss my arse.
I haven’t drunk milk in decades. We don’t keep it in the house except for specific recipes.
When I watch the news, or read up on pop culture, I realize I don’t access Twitter or Facebook, will not use Siri or an Echo, haven’t watched a reality show since Real World San Francisco, and I know maybe 1% of the people that might be described at Internet Famous.
So the trend of shifting one’s life more fully online makes me feel like an outsider, an old guy choosing to not keep up with the times. Fine by me.
When I need cow milk for a recipe, I buy the smallest container that will provide for my need, then any dump out what’s left. My gf drinks milk, but it has to be skim. She avoids drinking her milk in front of me, since it grosses me out.
For things like oatmeal, waffles, granola, etc I use soymilk.
Interesting question, I am of Irish and French descent (second generation American). We went through 8-10 gallons of milk a week in our house when I was a child, and my parents cooked with cheese constantly.
I feel the same, at some point I’ll just be that “weird old lady”.
Went to breakfast with a friend of mine and she ordered a glass of milk. I was surprised because it seemed so unusual for someone in their early 50’s.
My own weird thing is about beer. For hanging out at home the cheep light beer is just fine and preferable. Oh, I have a case of good stuff chillin right now because we have company coming, but otherwise, it’s usually the cheep stuff.
Ummm, the fact that we’re just barely sociable here?
Seriously, I pride myself in saying “Oh, sorry, I’m not on social media.”
If someone countered with “The Dope counts!” they’d get a Wilhelm Scream. Or a Darth Vader “Nooooo…!”
“Life’s Too Short To Drink Cheep Beer.”
(previous aphorism presented as a case in point supporting non-social nature of this board)
ETA something on topic: I spoon a lot of cow’s milk. I never drink it, but cereal is my favorite breakfast and snack.
We live in NYC and do our grocery shopping on foot for our family of four. I’m the big milk drinker (coffee, cereal and the occasional recipe) and usually get quart containers because anything larger occasionally spoils before I finish. Everybody else drinks soy product. If there’s going to be heavy or overly bulky stuff we bring along a folding cart. Plus we shop pretty much every day.
I tried a couple of times in the 80’s to drink a glass of milk, due to the whole “does a body good” campaign. Never could struggle through more than two sips though. I love cheese and cream and sour cream and cottage cheese and cream cheese, but milk is gross. I used to buy a gallon of whole a week while the kids were small, but now its just a half gallon now and then for some recipes.
I make gallons of unsweetened iced tea in rotating flavors and keep those in the fridge for drinking.
Message boards ore social in nature. But they are a huge step above the likes of Facebook or Instagram. Because at least on MBs, you’re having a back and fourth conversation.
Conversations can happen on FB too, but they seem to be less frequent and more about “look at me” or “check this funny video out” etc… YMMV.
Agreed, and as message boards seem to be slowly fading away, we’re left with “short attention span theater”. I much prefer this sort of interaction, and hope places like SDMB remain.
I agree too, For all that we bicker and squabble, the level of debate is usually pretty damn high and people do take the time to actually explore the subject in some depth.
People do have their minds changed and their horizons broadened here, not sure that happens too often on twitter.
My household easily consumes a gallon of whole cow’s milk per day. My daughter consumes milk more than anything else combined.
Personally, I would drink a lot more milk if it were lower in carbs. That’s the main reason I will use nut “milk,” not due to fat or dairy content or anything. Sometimes I drink heavy cream.
I don’t really eat cereal, but I never put milk in it. I consume a lot of tea and don’t put anything in it. Cream goes in coffee, if anything.
As far as trends go, I’m not very trendy but I don’t think I particularly go against trends, either.
ETA: On Social Media, I think people (and brands, since I do this professionally) who “get” social media use it for conversations, also. I also like reading and discovering content, especially twitter. I use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, and Google Plus professionally but not much personally.
Yeah, some of the comments I see against social media make me think that the people saying this stuff either haven’t actually experienced social media directly, or they have a really shitty feed.
