Ever wonder how many socks you've worn over your lifetime?

This is a quirky site I got in my email today:

I put in my age and it told me:

I have no idea if this is accurate or not, but it could very well be! No idea what method they are using to calculate this either… just thought it was neat.

So what about you?

F_X

“…you have worn approximately 5980 pairs of socks, and you have owned approximately 690 pairs of socks.”
It’s possble in my case…what with all the creekwalking I did in my younger years.

“In 55 years, you have worn approximately 14300 pairs of socks, and you have owned approximately 1650 pairs of socks.”

Wow, I had no idea I’d borrowed that many! I wonder if I gave them all back?

Ever wonder how many socks I’ve worn in my lifetime?
Lemme think…

Ummmm, no.

It seems to me that their calculations are based on a straight linear relationship of age to sock ownership, and that they assume 30 pairs owned and 260 pairs worn per year. In my case, the estimate seems a little high. I usually buy a bag with siz pairs a normal white socks about twice a year, plus perhaps one or two pairs of dress socks. Since I wear sandals frequently, I may not need as many socks as those who wear shoes every day.

You mean you have to change them???

Huh? 260 pairs per year. What about the other 105 days? Do you not wear socks on the weekends? Ever? I would have throught 365 pairs of socks a year would be more normal, but maybe they take into account South Sea Islanders where they never wear socks?

In 32 years, you have worn approximately 8320 pairs of socks, and you have owned approximately 960 pairs of socks.

That sounds about right. See, I have this thing about socks. I love 'em! Probably own about 40 different coloured socks (pairs, not individual) at the moment and frequently borrow the hubbies as well.

3 favourite pairs are: Eeyore socks, purple fleece and purple/cream rag socks. SOOOOO comfy!!

30 pairs owned a year? Either they’re assuming that everyone is a dyed-in-the-wool (or cotton) amateur des chausettes like Washte, or they’re assuming that everyone’s socks wear out very fast.

I buy 3-5 pairs of socks a year, and have fewer than 10 pairs in my sock drawer. Tights, on the other hand, are another matter…

I can rely on relatives sending me 3-6 pairs of socks every Christmas. I may buy 3-6 pairs myself in the course of a year. That’s 6-12 pairs per year.

Assuming the maximum … that’s 12 pairs per year for, umm, forty years … so I own 480 pairs of socks. (Assuming I never throw any out. Which is a depressingly accurate assumption.)

What I actually own, of course, is 960 individual socks. Mostly with holes in. In a big tangled pile.

Yeah, I think their estimates are high. I tend to buy high-quality wool and synthetic socks and wear them for years before I finally get rid of them. I also wear sandals most of the time in the summer.

But it is an interesting question, isn’t it?

I wonder how many cubic feet of socks I’ve owned?

I can’t cite this. Jerry Lewis once told an interviewer that since he became a wealthy celebrity, he’s never, ever, worn a pair of socks more than once.

Being that he came to prominence sometime in 1947, he’s owned at least 20,440 pairs.
