We tried adopting a stray that was hanging around last year, but he turned out to have FIV, so we had to put him down. I couldn’t find a vet who would neuter him because he was FIV+, and we really could not keep a tomcat inside. Nor could we let him roam outside, to infect other cats. So we had him put down. He was a sweet, affectionate little fellow, too, not very old.

This is odd to me, Lynn, because I have taken two cats off the street who are/were FIV+. Thomas lived with me for 7 years with the FIV until he died of AIDS 4 years ago. Harley is still around after 7 years, and though he has a lot of little problems (some FIV related, some from years of hard time on the street), he’s doing fine. I didn’t realize that it was SOP for some vets to refuse to neuter cats due to FIV. My boys co-habitate with my non-FIV+ cats and all live in harmony with little risk of disease transmission. I would have missed out on two awesome guys if my vet had insisted I put them to sleep.
