I want to state this again, just so Mr Nyx gets my point. I don’t care about the subject matter. I don’t care if you are right or wrong. Just show me once where you cited any outside source. For anything.
I’ve no opinion on nyxx (In fact, I didn’t know he existed until today, I very rarely notice who’s who here) but Aldebaran was hardly the worst poster we had. Despite his failings, I still think that many of his points of view were valid, even though they rubbed people the wrong way.
This is why you are a dumbass who is now so far in the negative when it comes to respect around here that you could post with sagacity, wisdom and reserve for the next couple of decades and you aren’t going to dig yourself out of the hole.
Una’s statistics were OK-ish but, as you pointed out, didn’t control for the possibility that violence against males generally might account for the difference that her statistics suggested. Rather than find statistics to back your view, you just ranted against such data as was available (ie Una’s) based on your surmise about general male violence bias. And you just kept backing yourself, on and on and on without checking.
And now Measure for Measure shows with an actual cite that your surmise is dead flat out wrong. And even after that you keep going on about how your brilliant general male violence bias assumption is correct, totally ignoring the fact that those of us who are capable of reading for comprehension have realised that Measure for Measure has blown you out of the water already.
One of the things about being an arrogant, smartass, condescending knowitall (and I’m speaking from experience here ;)) is that you have to be right. It’s a high stakes game. Because arrogant, smartass, condescending knowitalls who end up being wrong, after having insulted all and sundry, end up looking like utter dickheads. If you want to see what an utter dickhead looks like, stand in front of a mirror.
Speaking as one ASCK to another, let me go through my thought processes.
Mister Nyx doesn’t quite get this, but everyone absorbed his point on the first round. Una was simply saying that pointing out a flaw in the data presented isn’t enough: you have to dig up the evidence. Because occasionally the evidence bites you on the nose.
For myself, the evidence is often just somewhat different than the story I had in mind. But there’s always at least a small twist in the data. What I was expecting was that male victimization would exceed female victimization – but not by a margin of 5:1. That just sounded off. If I found out that the facts contradicted my preconceptions… well we’re here to fight ignorance. I’d post them for the heck of it. I’ve done that here.
Anyway the twist in this instance was that male and female non-murderous but violent crime victimization rates were comparable in 2010. I’m guessing that older data would show greater male violent crime victimization – but again not by a 5:1 margin. The 2010 data is a puzzle.
Full disclosure: the data is from the Crime Victimization Survey which doesn’t cover murder victims for obvious reasons. So there may be a gender disparity there.
Anyway, Una conceded in her original post that her argument wasn’t airtight. That was good form. The right way to address it is to bring some facts to the table on your own, rather than just make loud claims about your own rectitude and borderline cranky assertions that your brilliance is misunderstood by an uncaring world.
It is, indeed, omphaloskepsis to spend as much time as you just ranted that you spent in self examination–particularly when it does not seem that you discovered anything more than navel lint in the effort.
Your assumption that I do not know the meanng of the word is one more example of you projecting your own inadequacies onto others.

Perhaps he meant that the statistics quoted relied on numbers of criminal convictions, rather than arrests or reports. They don’t, but maybe he wanted something to throw out there and didn’t actually read the cites.

Actually, the real reason I didn’t step up is because I don’t have any fucking idea what thread you’re talking about. Based on what I’ve seen of your posts, though, I’m guessing the reason no one sprang to your defense was because you had, once again, failed utterly to understand another person’s position, and as is your habit, you made your customary leap from, “I can’t understand what this person is saying,” to “This person must therefore be a bigot.”
Don’t feel too lonely, though. You’re far from the only poster here who can’t tell the difference between “making a sound, factually supportable argument,” and “yelling really loud.”
