OAOW played in the SDMB game, NAF, Evil Dead is the first he’s missed in some time.
See, that’s what I meant about making a fool of myself. He only plays on the SDMB at least right?
I believe so.
It seems like mafia has been going on here and the offboard site longer than two years to me, and I’ve been playing for almost a year now–Arkham kicked off Night 0 on March 14 of last year–I guess it comes from the large number of games that have gone off.
I didn’t even follow the boards much until the game room showed up and I got involved in Mafia because of it.
Now that’s it all over, a question for the gallery - what the hell was I doing that was so scummy? I had most people (apart from sach) picking me on their scum lists - what were my “tells”?
story, where’s the scum boards? Are they open now?
I don’t remember anymore why I was so sure you were scum. It might have been that you were so confident, or maybe just that you kept being right. It was a long time ago that I got killed at this point so it’s hard to remember. I did quickly come around to deciding that you weren’t scum after I died though.
Ah well, the confidence thing was just the lesson I learnt from SDMB, where I held back too much and let people get away with stuff I knew I should call out. So this time round, I changed tack a little. And accused everybody.
It wasn’t a bad way to go actually. It made me re-examine the way I play town.
I think it works quite well for vanilla. Particularly in this case: once I started thinking that a Night Kill would turn me undead, the cost of getting lynched fell so I wasn’t too fussed about picking up suspicion.
In fact, without ever having played a power role bigger than mason, I’m seriously thinking that vanilla is the best town role. I’m guessing that power roles are always playing with one eye looking over their shoulder - don’t want to incriminate themselves to scum and don’t want to draw votes and be forced to claim. But vanilla are free to say exactly what they think at all times.
Actually, I think playing that way is a lousy way for a power role to play. I came to this conclusion at some point between Arkham (my first game and first town) and Marvel (my fourth game and second town). In both I was a power role. With Arkham, I was still getting my bearings. In Marvel, I spoke my mind as a mason with a potential bomb power (it only would activate if the other masons were dead). In SMB (game five, town detective) I also spoke my mind openly. The problem with playing cautiously when you have a power role is two-and-a-half-fold:
- If you vary your play between vanilla and power-role, scum will find you.
Corrolary to 1) Even if scum can’t metagame, they tend to target the cautious anyway, because that’s where power roles hide. (In Doperville, my second game, we scum took out the doc night one or two.)
2–and most important) Your power is secondary to the fact that you are a townie who has pro-town motivation to spur discussion and express your thoughts.
The power is nice, but people get too caught up in relying on it, both the players of the power roles and the other players. The powers should enhance your game playing, not be your game playing.
Oh, I agree entirely that that is the right way to play. But I suspect that the burden of knowing that as, say, detective, you could present the town with four confirmed townies IF YOU CAN JUST STAY ALIVE makes you second-guess yourself, and err on the side of caution. Whereas, in fact, attracting a few votes each day by playing more aggressively is probably the best way to survive.
I was bugged by the way you kept jumping targets, but the flow of the game didn’t really permit futher discussion, and I didn’t see the point after you’d gone after several scum in a row. I might have come back to you if Brewha had turned up town, but, hey…
I thought your case against me was particularly weak, and when you didn’t come back to even try and defend the points I’d countered, I had my hackles up. But like I said, the balance of your actions after that made you town in my mind.
And, Pleo - I’m still kicking myself for my “case” against you. I’d just outed Santo in the offboard game for doing exactly what I thought I saw you do in the vote record, and I was a little giddy with success. :smack:
