Yes, Homer, you are correct. Kansas City is Cowtown. There is even a KC-based cartoon CALLED “Cowtown”. And since Universal Press is based in KC, I declare the comic strip to be the authority on the matter.
Sorry, Connor. Like I said, do a Google search and you’ll see where the true Cowtown is.
Google references to Fort Worth in the 1st five pages: 18
Google references to Kansas City in the 1st five pages: 0
Google references to Calgary in the 1st five pages: 2
Others receiving mention: Wichita, Columbus, some place in New Jersey(!)
Does Kansas City still drive herds of cattle through the downtown streets and have a world renowned 10 block area called the Stockyards in Cowtown?
K…I didnt think so…
Ft. Worth, TX is unquestionably the Cow capital of the United States. KC has a lot of cows…but they don’t keep em downtown. I’ve been there a hundred times…this I know.
Ours graze right down from the Ft. Worth Art Gallery. You keepin yours on the Nelson Atkins lawn?
Actually, my search had a couple of KC references, it just didn’t say “KC” or “Kansas City” on the screen. And I discount the many companies with “Cowtown” in their name that happen to be in Ft. Worth. BUT, Kansas City’s official title seems to be “Heartland of America”.
However, I would like to present Radio Free Cowtown for your viewing pleasure. Please note the entire page dedicated to Cow Puns. Please note that I am not proud of this site.
Here is our very own Kansas City Magazine, complete with “Cowtown Chronicles” regular articles.
And from the Wall Street Journal, please look under “Nicknames”. Then please compare this to WSJ’s article on Fort Worth, and note the pitiful selection of non-Cowtown nicknames.
And I’ve heard of a New York strip steak, and a KC strip steak, but I’ve never heard of a Fort Worth strip steak. Or should I say a The City Worth Looking Into strip steak.
SS, I will give you several concessions. The biggest one is that seemingly every single page I turn up for Ft. Worth has some sort of cow or image of cattle on it. Ft. Worth has definitely maintained a cow culture.
KC, on the other hand, has lost a lot of its Cow presige (yes, that is the first time those two words have EVER been next to each other). Especially since the Flood of '51 that wiped out the stockyards. Here is a wonderful little article on what used to be in KC. Please note the cows walking through downtown KC.
I would suggest that BOTH cities are cowtowns who have each claimed a capital “C” Cowtown as nicknames, and equally justifiable as well. Both have livestock exchanges, and both have a rich tradition. Unfortunately for KC, that tradition has been fading. But due to its nature as a hub market city, I would venture a guess to say that when the cattle business was beginning to boom, KC was the city more famous for its cows than Ft. Worth, as so many railroads intersected and disbursed from there, whereas Ft. Worth cows would either be going west, or to Kansas City.
I still say the tiebreaker goes to the comic strip :D.
You guys dont even have a cow anymore…hehe…c’mon…admit it…admit it…
We’ve got cows walking through downtown everyday…comic strip or no…we gotta take the cake for that. Hell…we got wedding chapels in the stock yards where you can have a Cowboy wedding. The damn pastor shoots a six-shooter when you kiss the bride.
We have the original Truckousine! The streets are made of cowshit…there are horses being ridden around with real live cowboys on em…
Hell…thats just the strip area…that doesnt even include the stockyards…
