Explain the reasoning behind this Christmas card design, please...

So I received a Christmas card earlier this month, the card from a family comprised of two professionals, a man and his wife, and their daughters. The two professionals are doctors in a medium-sized city in the US and, to the best of my knowledge, this card was sent to everybody they know.

It’s a simple family portrait, everybody in their Sunday best, but behind the family is the image of Michael Orr, from the movie The Blind Side, made up to look like the Christmas card in the movie. The family had obviously cut and pasted the image from the movie card into their card as Orr’s image is exactly the same (same shirt, expression, etc.)

Pulling that card out of the envelope was one of the singular WTF? moments of my life. Anybody care to take a shot as to explaining why a couple of upper middle-class white professionals would do such a thing? Is it funny? Is there some “put Michael Orr in your Christmas card and have a big laugh” meme that I didn’t know about?

They’re fans of the movie and they think it’s funny.

It’s like if my son and his wife photoshopped Chewbacca or Marshawn Lynch or Gollum in their family photo.

Humor (across the pond they call it humour).

We have friends who are both very creative. We look forward to their card each year, as the humor is intense/subtle/obvious/hidden/all of the above. I looked at last year’s card for several minutes before I noticed the artfully Photoshopped pile of dog crap behind their dog.
