My IRL first name is Robert, I’m of Germanic descent through my father’s family, and my name is a play on wunderbar, German for wonderful. I chose it to feign an egotistical net personna.
I signed up as KayElCee, which is a phonetic spelling of my initials. After a while it seemed both too boring and too personal.
I like plants and gardening in general and houseplants/tropicals in particular, so I decided to pick a name based on that interest. I’m rather proud of the Monstera deliciosa I grew from seed, so that was my choice.
Arrested Development renewed my faith in humanity. Even if there are a thousand “How I Met Your Mother” and “Two and a Half Men” type shows for every Arrested Development…AD will always exist.
…Perhaps even in movie length format in the future.
I always hear Vunderbar from Kiss Me, Kate when I see your name.
Mine came from my grandmother, Margaret Katherina, and my mom, Katherina. Then I read a book with a character named Catriona, and adapted it. I’m still kinda peeved at not being the next Katherina, so I can be this way!
Adrian is a character in the Discworld’s Going Postal, colleague of Mad Al and Sane Alex. He says he’s not mad but he can’t prove it.
Seems to fit.
It’s pretty much what most people call me, I’ve had the name since about oh, the 9th or 10th grade.
I like my real name, but most people prefer one syllable. I don’t mind.
Mine is the hero from the Airplane movies, a guy with significant issues that haunt him, is long winded to the point of making his listener turn suicidal, makes bad jokes, quits on himself way too easily, but ultimately sucks it up and comes through when he needs to.
And i have a drinking problem.
There are several reasons for mine-
-
I used to have hippos in my garden when I was in Africa and I wish I still did.
-
Its a metaphor for how I feel about myself a lot of the time.
-
Its fun and quirky and totally random which I love.
Not very interesting. Paul is my real given name, and Parkhead is the name used by Weegies for Celtic Park, where my soccer team (Glasgow Celtic) is based. It’s the name of a district in the east end of Glasgow.
How’s that working out for you?
See- I can’t help but think papsmear when I see your username. And I am a guy, so I am not sure why…
Mine is from my stepdad- he is only 11 years older than me and he moved in when I was 16, so we had rather the same odd sense of humor. He had a nickname from college of Guru Jimi, and so I named myself Guru Julp- my initials (well, some of them, and the ones I was using at the time) are JLP, which, when pronounced, sounds like Julp. So there.
I was not feeling very creative when I picked mine. I went to my bookshelf and pulled at random and took my name from the main character. The book was The Man Who Never Missed by Steve Perry.
Ah. I only asked because that was my great-great-something or other grandmother’s name. I was a little surprised to see “he.”
There is a saying (might just be in Tennessee) when something is really great-it’s “too much **jelly **for the roll.”
I knew it!! That song plays in my mind every time I see you post. Definitely some of the best bass work from Victor Wooten.
Agent Foxtrot: Well, my initials are A.F., and “Foxtrot” is the International Phonetic Alphabet letter for F. I chose “Agent” for A to create some sort of spy/intrigue imagery. The SDMB was the first time I ever used Agent Foxtrot, and I liked it so much that I made it my handle for everything.
I signed up on the SDMB originally as FoamFighter because I’m a LARPer.
One of the reasons I love the SDMB is because of the highly inventive puns, play-on-words, and double-entendre people created in their usernames.
I thought it might be tied to Jelly Roll Morton.
Bruce Campbell --> Xena --> Autolycus --> FFXI username --> here
Ah, I get that. Suffice to say I write gender-bending fantasy.
Oh, thank goodness! I’ve seen Dopers get pretty worked up over people assuming they are a different gender, so I was afraid it might be happening to you (if you are male and picked what you thought was a male name) and whew.
Kapyn?
