The poster is likely one warning from a permanent ban. If so this should not be the offense that does it.
Genocide as a source for humor takes a certain skill level to pull off. And a context in which the satire is understood. This was a fail, a very stupid choice … but with hateful intent? I don’t read it that way. The straw to ban someone over? Meh. Let the straw that breaks the back be a better straw.
I do wonder if he really is in a suburb of Munich because the post-script of
is actually kind of dark humor funny in context if it was really said cluelessly.
I’m posting what I said in the pit thread about this:
It’s just meta-humor where racist things are said absurdly. Note that just because it doesn’t pass your test as humor, doesn’t mean that it isn’t a joke.
I would be happy to see Budget Player Cadet leave the SDMB, for reasons better explained in other fora. But this particular offense, as clumsily handled as it was, seems clearly identified as an attempt at edgy humor, not as a serious expression of hate directed at Jews.
That kind of so-called “Meta-Humor” only works in a context. In Blazing Saddles, we know that the town is full of inbred, stupid racists, so when the old lady says “Up yours, nigger”, it’s funny.
If, however, the old lady had just said it in the middle of an interview or something, it would NOT be ‘meta-humor’.
BPC decided to just shit in the middle of a thread about exterminating vermin. The fact that he put /jk afterwards shouldn’t protect him.
Meta is when some CT newbie comes in and tries to educumate us all about what the liberal media is doing to brainwash us about Israel, and someone else chimes in about The Joos. Or when we’re taking about off-board racists.
So how many of these types of “jokes” do they let slide without warning then? More than for some other poster, simply because BPC is one warning away from being banned?
It struck me as a failed attempt at dry humor. I’m fairly good at dry humor; it’s a tricky thing. And you step on your dick a lot when you’re learning how to use it.
I’m glad it’s not my decision as to whether this is the straw to break the camel’s back or not.
Meta-humor without context isn’t meta-humor, it’s just racist drivel.
I love the fact that you’re tying yourself into a pretzel trying to defend this comment.
Let’s propose a thought experiment:
In the middle of a discussion about Obama’s health care law, someone comes in and, out of the blue, says “Obama’s just a dumb nggr. He only wants to see white women’s boobies. That’s why he made the law–to get boob pics. He should be lynched. /jk :D”
Does BPC have a history of race- or religion-bating? Or was this an isolated incident where a joke went awry as described above and people are taking it seriously because they’re offended?
Even if it was a joke, it’s not a clear line. Had he said, say, ‘niggers’, I think the inherent hostility of the word and the baggage it carries would have crossed a different line. Had he said something along the lines of ‘people who talk on their cell phones while in line’, it would have been extremely distant from any line. IMHO, ‘Jews’ is pretty far from the former, but a good ways past the latter. A note rather than an infraction seemed warranted, barring a pattern of rabble rousing or a broader undercurrent of anti-semitism in his posts.
