Extremely popular, or even legendary entertainers whose work you've never seen/heard

Until this thread, I never even heard of Justin Bieber.

I’ve never heard Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga. I’ve never seen an episode of most TV shows that people talk about (from Friends, Seinfeld, All In the Family to Lost, American Idol, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, 30 Rock).

This confuses me too. If you’ve never heard them, how do you know they’re mumbled?

If you can give this song at least 30 seconds of your time, you’ll see why some of us are so confused. He doesn’t mumble at all. If you don’t like his singing or the music, no problem, but saying they’re something they’re not is just odd.

“Riders On the Storm”

30 seconds or less of these songs will confirm our confusion. You don’t have to listen to the whole songs (though I think they’re all pretty great), just a bit of the vocals:

“People Are Strange”
“Alabama Song”
“You’re Lost Little Girl” (and because I can’t resist, Siouxsie’s brilliant cover)
“Love Her Madly”
“Break On Through (To The Other Side)”
“Light My Fire”
“Love Me Two Times”
“Touch Me”
“Hello, I Love You”

The vocals don’t kick in until the song is well underway, but this shows the fallacy also.

“The End” (the opening of Apocalypse Now)

Now this one, this is my favorite Doors song, it just makes me so happy, but I will admit that it’s hard to understand the lyrics, but it’s not because of mumbling, but a kinda rocky/bluesy slurry singing style. I don’t pay attention to the lyrics anyway, even though they’re interesting to me, it’s that I love the music so much. I do love Jim, but this is one song I could listen to as an instrumental over and over again.

“LA Woman”

How about someone whose songs I know I’ve heard, but can’t recall at all? I know Celine Dion is famous and I know I’ve heard some of her stuff and I’ve seen the Titanic video thing, but I guess the songs just didn’t stick. I remember one time I heard her on the radio and thought it was Amy Grant. I remember nothing of the song other than that.

Dean only had 3 credited movie roles but he was nominated for best actor for 2 of them - Giant and East of Eden. His other role was Rebel without a Cause and he was nominated for a BAFTA award for that one. Those 3 roles only spanned '55 and '56. He died before Giant was released.

All the noted silent film performers. I haven’t seen a single second of a Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, or Clara Bow movie. I must have seen some Chaplin over the years but I can’t specifically remember doing so.

A couple of years ago I had to google a picture of Paris Hilton (whatever she does) just to see what she looks like.

I have yet to read Agatha Christie.

I’ve never heard or seen Lady Gaga.

Have you seen WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, by any chance?

Ha! The dudes in Poison and Ratt would piss themselves in joy at the mere mention of Led Zep in the same sentence as them.

Zappa on the Mike Douglas show in 1976.

The Beatles.

But they might be confused since Zepplin was a 70’s band.

Yes, Death Becomes Her and She-Devil are great adult fare. Point taken though.

Anything by any major rap singers (alive or dead) are out of my realm. May have heard them in some car driving by with windows open and speakers set to high, but didn’t know who it was and was quite happy when the car moved on.

Also, most things with zombies or vampires - don’t care and find them silly/stupid.

Know very little about recent teen hit singers of the day, although I do listen to a local radio station that plays current popular songs - but not always sure who they are as the DJ’s never mention who sings them. I actually like a lot of the new music - but again, couldn’t really tell you who sings the songs.

I’ve never read Terry Pratchett. No desire to, either.

I’ve never seen most of the popular reality shows. Big Brother, American Idol, Survivor, The Apprentice, Jon & Kate, the whole schmear. I’ve seen them on the checkout stand and on my program grid, but never, ever watched them. Nor will I.

I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard Elvis Costello, though I have a vague idea of what he looks like. I believe he was a guest star on *Two-and-a-Half Men *once.

Well, I found out about Django Reinhardt on 6/28/10, but I figure that’s close enough. He was a great European jazz guitarist from the late '20s to his death in 1953. He co-founded a quintet with violinist Stephane Grappelli and many of their recordings have become jazz standards.

Are you married or dating? Just asking.

I thought I’d never watch a cooking show. Then I got married. That’s pretty much all she watches.

My point is not that you’ll definitely watch reality shows, just that you never know what you’ll end up being forced to watch in another period of your life.

Smashing Pumpkins. AC/DC. Lady Gaga. Snoop Doggy Dog or any other rap stars…

Ditto on Woody Allen…I’ve heard the name and he’s famous for making films, yes? Other than that, I’m clueless and that’s okay with me.

This isn’t a person but…It’s a Wonderful Life - just about everyone in the world has probably seen this movie. Not me.

And I’d love to be able to say that I’m ignorant of anything relating to Lady Gaga…but unfortunately, I can’t.

I have always despised Woody Allen and made a point of never seeing or reading anything he has done. Even before the whole bruhaha.

When he dies, it will be HAPPY DANCE TIME for me!!!
