Right, and your response to her was, “It must’ve hit close to home.”, so if you are correct what you essentially did was punched someone with cancer in the face BBQ Pit style. If it hit close to home you should have some fucking empathy. Otherwise WTF does ‘hitting close to home’ even mean? So yeah, if you were right, and it did hit close to home the you DID make fun of someone who is dying.

Right, and so she doesn’t show up in all attention whore threads, but she does show up in the attention whore thread about someone who is DYING. Hmm, what could the lowest common denominator here be?
To be clear, I don’t know if she is dying and wants attention because of it, but neither do you. That’s why this thread is in poor taste. It tells people that if they are dying it’s inappropriate to whine about it lest they offend the delicate sensibilities of the healthy.

When I think about the classy way that Warren Zevon checked out —saying his goodbyes and 'I love you’s, creating a last work of art, tying up all of his loose ends, and then just leaving— and compare it with Farrah Fawcett’s sad, contrived, final grasp at publicity, it makes me feel a little nauseous.
Personally I try to avoid all of the Farrah news. I’m just not interested. I feel empathy for her as I feel for every person who’s sick and dying in a painful way. My question is, if I’m able to more or less avoid the knowledge of what’s happening to her with my TV and radio on 24/7, why can’t those who are uninterested do the same?

Oh STFU. There are hundreds of Dopers in the Death Pool, probably thousands over the years as it has been going on for quite a few years.
We are not making light of their struggle to live, we are merely trying to predict when they will die. And I don’t actually care if they struggle, a lightning strike is as good as a car wreck is as good as a prolonged bout with cancer. But a celebrity cancer istruggle is likely to get a lot of press, which makes their deaths more predictable, and makes them more attractive candidates for people’s lists. I am content with a peaceful death, so long as it’s within the predicted calendar year.
You can go pit the entire concept if you like.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of checking out this board prior to my subscription lapsing and noticed a nasty thread that bothered me.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in early April. Haven’t even gone the full round yet.
It bugs me to hear people so joyous in regard to someone dying of cancer. Geez, forgive me if I feel that some of you are just a bit malicious. I appreciate the sentiment of the people that actually liked Farrah in her “glory days”. She was my idol as a kid. Wanted to BE Jill Monroe like nothing else. Typical young pre-teen girl. Oh, I liked Cher too.
I have in no manner exhibited myself as an attention whore since April of 2007; my family has recovered completely and I think that you people should really get a conscience.
PS I’ve got more time on these boards that most all of you and have watched and watched and have been humiliated before. I just don’t care anymore.
This will be my last post. I’ll be contacting Jenny to cancel this hatefest for me. Other than Quadgop, Tuba and a few others there’s no loss on this end.

That was uncalled for. She was a part of one of the most popular shows of her era, and displayed some actual acting chops in “The Burning Bed”. Her career may have declined but that happens to many actresses as they age, and the fact is, she made her pile, and probably couldn’t care less that she wasn’t getting the work.
I can’t pretend to understand her motivations at this moment, but perhaps her message to us is that even a person who has lived what many would consider to be a charmed life can face tragedy. I haven’t seen any of her stuff about this, I don’t have cable or whatever, but I would bet that she is a class act about it.
On a related note, why the hell is Suzanne Somers still alive? The last I heard, she had some terminal disease and crowed about curing it with alternative therapies! Next thing I know, she is back hawking crapola on QVC! She either lied about her disease, it’s treatment, or quack therapies actually work!
At least Farrah exhausted legitimate avenues of therapy before surrendering to the purveyors of false hope, and I can scarcely blame her for that. Given her resources I might do the same. You can’t spend it after you are gone, after all.
She had breast cancer, which is far from a death sentence.
