Incidentally, although everyone learns that mass != weight in intro physics, physicists mix units more than any other group. Masses are routinely given in electron-volts, energies in inverse centimeters, degrees kelvin, etc. It’s just more convenient.
BWAHAHA! That was priceless.
Cthulhu: yeah, maybe saying ‘weigh … kilograms’ is wrong from a physicists PoV. And physicists do things with zero that are wrong from a maths PoV. Sometimes you just have to accept what’s convenient.
I love how we get sidetracked in these Pit threads sometimes. DreadChthulhu is absolutely correct from a strict physics-standard definition of weight, and of kilogram, of course, and I got a bit of a chuckle out of his first post, because I got the joke. I scrolled down to see if anybody else was going to explain it to Mirror Image egamI rorriM before I got a chance to, and WHAT a trainwreck it turned out to be.
Hey Man With The Golden Gun, give, dude. Did Isaiah get suspended, or what?
High School is to prepare you for the real world, which also sucks.
To bring this back on topic…
(((TMWTGG)))
Kids are cruel. And it’s kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t kinda thing because if you complain, the Isaiah and friends will increase their bullying, and if you kick Isaiah’s butt you’ll get in trouble. I’d go with sticking to snotty remarks. I really feel for you, man.
Anybody at the workplace who acts as immature as Isaiah isn’t going to last 5 minutes anyway. This is a different situation. TMWTGG has classses with this guy and has to associate with him daily.
And we’re NOT telling him to shrug it off. My goodness, aren’t you even reading the posts? We’re telling him to grow a skin and not let the insults get to him and to deal with it in adult and humorous matter. We never said at any point it was acceptable, but we know through our own experiences how to deal with it.
TMWTGG apparently doesn’t understand what we’re saying either, comparing his situation to Columbine. I suspect he’s probably been sheltered his whole life, and is used to having his parents constantly protect him. More power to him for getting the principal to intercede, but neither the principal or his parents can protect him all the time. He’s going to have to learn how to cope with these types of problems himself. And being called a sniper is pretty low on the problem scale, compared to the people who’ve been called nigger, fag, fatass, retard, etc all their lives.
Being called a sniper is low on the problem scale? Look, if word got around about that, I could have been investigated by the police. They investigate EVERY SINGLE LEAD they get, no matter how absurd. Believe it or not, accusing someone of murder isn’t something to take lightly. Not to mention the libel and slander charged that come with it.
Hey! Golden Gun?
Remember something - even though I gave you all those things to ponder about in my first post, there’s something else too…
There are two very important rules in life…
(1) There’s always a victim, and,
(2) Don’t be one…
In your last post above you gave off the air of someone who was enjoying the role of victim just a little bit too much for comfort there. Watch that one. It’s a dangerous trap.
Sure, the sniper thing is a pain in the ass because of the potential Police enquiries. I’ll grant ya that. But back off with the “libel and slander” stuff OK? You’re nudging the envelope with that kinda stuff. They’re just assholes in high school, OK? No need to amplify it bigger than it is - if you do, you’re consciously choosing to portray yourself as a bigger victim than you truly are, and then people will have less time for your story.
Actually, falsingly accusing someone of a crime, especially one as serious as murder, does constitute libel and slander. I’m not going to pursue it with the boys, as I think they’ve pretty much learned their lesson (one asked me if we were still friends), but if I wanted to, I could have a case.
Also, since the situation with the boys has been resolved, can a mod wrap this puppy up?
A. you do understand, don’t you, that libel and slander are two distinctly different acts? (libel=written, slander = verbal)
B. And I believe that no, it’s not necessarily so that “falsly accusing some one of a crime is slander/libel”. Specifically, for instance, a person who has been found not guilty of a crime (generally) doesn’t get to sue everyone for libel/slander while they were accusing them. Or if some one called the police genuinely suspecting that another person had committed a crime, and they were found not guilty etc, I don’t believe that they would necessarily have to worry about slander/libel.
Not that I’m claiming that in this case, it wasn’t a nasty thing to do, certainly.
I don’t know if you noticed or not but the little morons did both.
yes, I noticed. However, I was responding directly to exactly what I quoted. and, according to the quoted portion, it’s not clear (to me) that he’s referring only to the specific facts from his personal example (as in "in this case…), instead, he made a flat out statement that contained at least a couple of questionable points.
He may indeed have a case against the guys who did this to him, and yes, for both slander and libel. But - merely falsely accusing some one of a ‘serious crime’ does not, I believe, all by itself ‘constitute libel and slander’.
I probably should have included in my remarks a question as to “do you mean this statement only in relation to the incident in question or as a more generalized comment”.
Hmmmm… you’re pretty sure about that are you? You reckon you could “do 'em” for libel huh?
Well, something equally true is that one would have a case for arguing that you were just plain being vengeful too.
So you have a choice - go ahead and do it, or just plain shutup about it because few things in life are as infuriating as hearing someone talking ad nauseum about what they “could” have done if “they’d wanted to”. Those who can, do. The rest? They talk about it.
Either press the case, or drop it. You’re just sounding like a broken record otherwise.
