Close Friends are just a default group that you can use (or not).
In general, Facebook groups are useful for setting:

Privacy settings (like setting it so that Close Friends can tag you in photos, regular friends cannot, and acquaintances cannot even see your photos)

Who you want to see a certain post (it’s my birthday party! come everyone! or only close friends!)

Seeing updates, as ZipperJJ points out, so you don’t have to see crap from all 7500 of your acquaintances, just your 4 close friends

Notifications – you can make a special group for people you really care about and be notified by email/phone/whatever whenever they post anything at all
