Facebook vs. Google+ .. Opinions?

I’m really enjoying Google’s new social network Google+. Lots of great privacy features and it feels a lot less cluttered and noisy (400+ friends is wayyy too much). Ironically, it feels a lot like Facebook used to about 4 years ago when only us college kids were using it. I’ve now converted my personal profile into a musician/fan page so I don’t have to consume myself with 450 status updates on my news feed every time I log in, but I’m still able to use it to market my music.

Anybody else tried it? I have lots of invites available for it if anyone would like one.

Reported.

I like it a lot, but hardly anyone I know is using it so I constantly forget to check it for updates. Meanwhile nearly all of my family and friends are on Facebook, so that’s what I check most often.

What?

That’s a moderator goof. Dead Cat reported something that a moderator removed, but then forgot to remove the post saying it was reported. Mods do that once in awhile in a (futile) attempt to show they’re not omniscient.

I check Facebook, but almost never post there. Would I like Google+ better? Do you need to get invited, or can I just enable something through Gmail?

Dustin_Jake, welcome to the message board. No, it’s not a moderator goof, because we haven’t actually deleted any post. Dead_Cat thought your OP looked vaguely spam-like and asked us to look into it.

To someone unfamiliar with Google+, I can understand how it might resemble spam.

I really like Google+ but very few people I know uses it so I stay on Facebook for now.

I’m a Facebook guy myself. I have a Google+ account, but I don’t really like it. I understand the privacy modes on Facebook. I also understand that Google is constantly trying to predict what I want to do, and usually gets it wrong. I don’t want Google involved in my personal life like that.
In other news…I can see a time in the not-so-distant future that the “Reported” would be for a thread change to GD…

I’m using both fairly frequently. I prefer the interaction on G+, mostly because the crowd of people I have in my circles on there is just more interesting in general than my crowd of Facebook friends is.

I like G+ a lot more, but not enough of my friends use it, so I’m still primarily Facebook. Unfortunately.

I check Google+ and Facebook every day. I long for the day when most of my friends/family make the switch, because I like Google+'s interface a lot more than Facebook’s.

I prefer Google+ to Facebook but most of my friends don’t use Google+ so I’m really only active on Facebook.

I would happily accept an invitation to G+ although I don’t know how I’ll use it. Every time I check plus.google.com I get the message “Already invited? We’ve temporarily exceeded our capacity. Please try again soon.”

Still,at least if I have the invite, I’ll have a reason to check more often. TIA.

A lot of my friends switched to G+ when it first launched, but then stopped using it because of Google’s penchant for butting into their personal business. I stopped using it for that reason too. I will say, though, their game platform is much less wonky than FB’s.

Sent one to the email address listed in your SDMB profile.

Re Google butting into my personal business, I haven’t particularly noticed.

I heard about this, and this is why I haven’t even checked to see when they will come out of beta (which is when i would actually join.)

I’m on G+ but for me it’s a bit of a ghost town, because:

  1. I’ve only got about 20 people in my circles there
  2. With one exception, they’re all already my Facebook friends so they/we all post over on fb, instead
  3. Except for Opal

My apologies - when I see an OP from someone with a join date in the same month that appears to be solely promoting a website/business, I tend to think it might be spam. I now see that you have posted in a number of other threads, making this less likely. No offence meant - I did at least think it was quite well-written and subtle spam :).

Just out of interest, I wouldn’t say that I was “familiar” with Google+, but I know what it is - why would it not be likely that Google might spam message boards in an attempt to increase the number of users?

Can you give some examples of how G+ butts into your personal business?

If you read their Terms of Agreement when you first sign up, it’s in there. Among other things, they reserve the right to use whatever photos you may post as part of their marketing plan.

I didn’t know it was there either until someone pointed it out to me. I’ve only posted one photo there that isn’t particularly personal, but the fact that they reserve the right suddenly left a bad taste in my mouth.
