Fake ID's in movies

I’ve seen several movies in which a fake ID is made by taking a photo of a person standing in front of a large mock-up of an out of state driver’s license. An example is in National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation (It was the only thing on in English), and it’s also shown in the first few minutes of The Girl Next Door. Do people actually make fake ID’s this way?

As an aside, please do not reply with information on any other method of making fake id’s, as the board has rules against that. I’m going to assume that since this has been depicted in at least two hollywood movies that it’s fair game for discussion.

I was wondering about this myself. I have an idea in mind for a new project (after we finish the one we’re currently making), and one of the scenes involves a shot of a driver’s license. I’m thinking we’d just use PhotoShop and hope people don’t notice the lack of a hologram.

Back when I was in college (~20 years ago) someone on campus got busted for doing exactly that. They had a large mock up of a WV state license against one wall of their dorm room and actually had a bit of a business going selling fake IDs. Most states that I’m familiar with now have text or part of a logo or something that overlaps the photo to prevent you from making a passable fake so easily.

FWIW, I’ve also seen an example of this in an episode of Freaks and Geeks.

In the early 90’s I personally arrested 2 guys doing exactly that.
What we never found out was where they got the oversized license template. It was really well made with a lot of detail on it.

Some friends of mine in college did just this.

They somehow also got their hands on the plastic overlays of real MA drivers licences, so they had the correct markings and everything!

Worked great for them, but I didn’t want one, due to the risks involved.
