Well, well, well…Looks like most of the dopers here were Air Force!!! I wonder why, could it be the harsh living conditions, the lousy food, the PT that we have to do? I don’t know (and all this is not true).
While I was in Saudi, we had 2 man air conditioned rooms. When I was stationed in Torrejon, Spain, we had lobster once a month. And PT was only saw in basic.
mama done told me not to go down to the army recruiting man downtown, didn’t realize she meant i should of gone to the AF recruiter instead…
purplebear,
Thanks. I needed that. Send more hugs. And a parka.
djwalker, that’s what I’m doing right now. Prime BEEF!! wooohooo! Some peeps just got back from a Silver Flag. I had to sit there crying and whining “I wanna go! I wanna go!!”
VP-49 AW (that’s f*chin AW to you) E-5
NAS Jacksonville
6 mo. det. to Keflavik Iceland ( women behind every tree)
6 mo. det to Sigonella Sicily ( that place still bombed out from WW-II? )
later, Tom.
somewhere between the smell of bootcamp, and the tears of not making E-4
I got 1 year, 10 months, and a few hours left… Boy I cant wait to get out… I spent all the time and effort going to bootcamp and a fairly hard A school to end up a NAS Sigonella cleaning, issuing hazmat, weedwhacking entire lawns, and picking up trash… People see me doing this job and say “is this your extra duty from NJP?” I reply proudly, “no, all good service”
God help me if I ever needed Close Air Support from the USAF. Marine Aviators know what Danger Close means, they spend six months in Quantico being a grunt, and I trust a guy who knows what it is like to freeze your ass off on an ambush mission. USAF is GREAT for bombing hard targets and blowing up buildings and stuff, just don’t pickle NOTHIN’ near UncleBill!
Jeez, Uncle Bill, my thoughts exactly! I slunk in here with a pencil sharpened, ready to jot down the names of Marines to flirt with. Not a one! Not that you and thinksnow aren’t enough for a girl like me, but jesus, I had no idea you all were such endangered species.
11B here as well, 89-93. What is this about tents? Ponchos? those thing make noise when the rain hits them. Damn, Motel six? I remeber having to peel myself off the ground when I was frozen to it a couple of times.
My Father was in the Airforce and asked why the hell I wanted to be a Paratrooper. you know the question. Why would you want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane? Cause it’s flown by the Airforce! <waits for the laughter>
US Navy, Naval Flight Officer, LT (O-3)
Electronic Warfare Mission Commander, EP-3 aircraft.
Stationed in Pensacola, San Antonio, Whidbey Island (VQ-1), and now flying a desk in Virginia Beach. Spent time (too much time) in WestPac and SWA.
Nahal (933 Infantry Brigade for you Americans); 932 Battalion, March '93 Bnei Gar’inim. Gradute, Sergeants Course (903). Served as Warrior, Squad Leader, Operations Sergeant and for one unpleasent week, Cook.
Reserve - currently a Squad Leader in a Bata"sh brigade in the Bik’ah. I go whenever they call me up, although they haven’t managed to find me yet in Manhattan (not that i would come if they called - unless I really felt like it).
Served the full three years. Oh, and I’m a Staff Sergeant - but then again, who isn’t?
Absolute Kudos to Air Force Sensors, Intel, air crews, and pilots for that particular mission and that Best-in-the-World abilities to bomb the crap out of deep targets. CLOSE Air Support is gooks-in-the-wire, being-overrun, need-a-stafing-run-cause-I’m-low-on-bullets kinda thing. When the blast from the detonation rocks your world only slightly less than it rocks theirs. In THAT situation, gimme a jarhead behind the stick.
"why not Minot? Awww… you finish it; I don’t have the heart to!
PB, the beauty is definitely raw around there; it’s too damn cold for it to be cooked! Bwahahahahahaha!
VB,USAF retired 1995! Proud to have served 17.5 years before they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse!
US Nuclear-trained Electronics Technician (Submarines): Reached ET2(SS). Later, after losing SubDuty eligiblity (Bad knees), became Electrician’s Mate, Reached EM1(SP). Got out on the early program at 15 years in 1999. Reservist now.
A few highlights:
NPTU Windsor Locks, CT. (Betcha the locals still don’t know they’ve got a no-feces-workin’-fer-real Reactor in their backyard!)
USS R.B. Russell (SSN 687): The only ‘boat with balls’.
USS Dixon (AS-37): The best damn tender in the Pacific Fleet in my day. So of course, she was made into razorblades right after I left.
NAVSTA Philly: Helped shut the base down under BRAC. That sucked.
NAVCRUITDIST Jacksonville, FL: Putting ‘Butts on the Bus’ in sunny Northern Florida.
