I’m giving up on Anarchy Online and looking for a replacement. I tried and hated Everquest and WoW. Then I stumbled upon the web site for Fallen Earth. Basically a post-apocalyptic online RPG with the Mad Max/Fallout Vibe (though not quite as brown ‘n’ grey as F3). Seems to have a nicely complex crafting, skill, and quest system. The more I read through their forums, the more I want to play it. However (as is the case with most new online games) there’s no free trial at this point. You gotta cough up $50 for the game. You do get a month free, but if you don’t like it you are out $50. I’ve seen a few gameplay videos on youtube and the game seems to have almost all positive feedback in its forums. So I’m almost definitely going to get this soon.
Has anyone here played Fallen Earth? What are your impressions?
Never heard of it until you mentioned it. However, after looking at their website, I think that if I had more money and more time I’d consider trying it. Unfortunately, I have neither. It seems quite intriguing, even if I’m not normally a fan of FPS. In this case, though, it seems there is quite a bit more to it than simply running around shooting people.
I’ve had it for about 5 days. It is pretty much like a Fallout 3 MMO.
I haven’t reached a “final conclusion” yet, and even when I do, it’ll likely not be very applicable to anyone else. I really, REALLY want to like this game. I like the concept, the artwork, the general feel.
But we’re not bonding, at least not yet. The controls are very much like a first-person shooter, which may seem a trivial difference, but it feels like a huge difference. In World of Warcraft or City of Heroes (or even in EVE) you “target” or select an enemy, then mash buttons (or click). In Fallen Earth, you have to do all that while running and aiming. For those used to Call of Duty or other FPS games on the PC, that’s not too bad, but it IS a lot of extra work. So much so that when I pop over to WoW or CoH, I’m much more relaxed, because I don’t have to be constantly “on the bubble”.
That extra level of work might be a good thing for some, but for me, it seems like extra work without any extra payoff. In other words, I want to play the game for the world, for the story, for the atmosphere, for the strategy - not for twitching and circling - for that, I’ll fire up Call of Duty or Rainbow Six.
I’ll still try to form a relationship with it before my first month is up…I really do want to love it.
That’s helpful, although having never played Fallout that comparison doesn’t do much for me. I am a WoW player, though.
Yes, I’ve read some things that lead me to conclude that FPS part is important to the creators, but personally, I’m not a fan of FPS (my husband is, though - I appreciate that there are a lot of people who do). I, too, would probably want to play for the world and atmosphere and artwork and not so much for frank combat. If the FPS aspect is too dominant I might not like it.
How big a focus is combat in that game? How much option do you have to lean towards more of one thing in the game, or more of another?
Sure. Just gimme $50 to buy the game and enough for the first month’s subscription - we’re eating rice and beans this week, and not 'cause we’re vegetarian ('cause we’re not).
I’m hoping at some point in the future to indulge my gaming desires, but it won’t be tomorrow, more’s the pity.
