Falling Skies - Season 3 thread

Season 3 of Falling Skies debuts tonight on TNT. Two 1-hour long episodes will air back-to-back tonight. Check your DVR’s!
When we last left the series: A group of rebel skitters had formed a tentative alliance with the humans. Karen (original blonde chick) is harnessed and working for the Overlords. Anne is pregnant with Tom’s child. The final scene of last season showed what appeared to be some new group of aliens descending to Earth.

A pretty good start. Nice opening battle. Karen controlling Hal is interesting. Was her glowing spine a shout-out to BSG fans? Creepy baby is creepy, and kind of a scifi cliche. It’s always uncomfortable to see a mom having doubts about her child. Terry O’Quinn’s scene was… brief.

Oh, and I didn’t recognize Robert Sean Leonard during his first scene, but in his second scene it hit me and I shouted “Wilson!”

I liked it, but WTH is wrong with these people? “Oh, my newborn baby is walking and talking, I won’t tell anyone” and “My boyfriend, who is a paraplegic, is missing and he’s wheelchair is still here. I won’t tell anyone, especially his family, that he’s missing although I suspected it’s all in his head, but someone may have taken him.”

I agree! But that’s the way it always seems to be on these TV shows and movies. They seem to NEVER share the important information. If my newborn baby started talking and moving around like that, I certainly wouldn’t keep it from my partner… I’d be scared sh*tless!

I don’t like all the doubts about the new aliens. Yeah, they might just be helping you to take over when the fishheads are taken out, but so? The worst that happens is they wipe you out which without their help the fishheads were going to do eventually anyway.

But overall pretty good, lots of action and stuff.

I like this better now than i did before.

I am very confused. I recorded two episodes on Sunday; part 1 and part 2. I expected that part 1 would answer the questions left dangling by the season ender (new aliens, etc.). NOTHING! Now they are working with them and they have names (Geronimo), but I expected more. I wonder if I should have gotten 3 hours of recording instead of 2. I’m confused enough that I might not watch anymore. And Terry O’Quinn, dead? I expected him to go onto be the ultimate bad guy.

I thought they explained the situation fairly clearly. It’s seven months laters, the new aliens are helping them win the war.

The season opener made me want to watch Defiance. Hybrid super-powered goddamned babies? “I’ve got the list of spies narrowed down. Nah, I’ll tell you later, it’s not like anyone would now want me dead.” How many cliches did we hit per-minute?

Also, Pope needs to die. His “Is I is or is I ain’t a part of your group” bullshit is too much, and someone should’ve fragged him during a battle or otherwise brought that story thread to an end. You can’t drag that shit out forever. Unlike with romantic tensions between leads, you CAN resolve frenemy tension and bring them into the fold without killing the show. Also, I’ll be surprised if the spy isn’t crippled guy or the girl Noah Wylie’s eldest is hanging with.

Helpful aliens aren’t altruistic. Seems to me the Native Americans had an interesting time forming alliances with different factions when Europeans settled, and it didn’t work out so great. President Professor History Teacher Tom Mason should know that. The Skitters are the most like the humans. They’re stuck between greater powers just like Earth. That will come into play.

There’s a handful of decent actors though. Wilson was a nice guest-shot. I’ll miss Locke.

Explained, maybe, but I felt like I was missing a complete episode. I even checked to make sure I was watching the episodes in the right order.

Not well done.

I totally agree, the whole “not telling people who have a vested interest in this weird thing” is way lame unless handled just right. That’s one of the things that really turned me off Lost.

I was also really thrown off by how blonde girlfriend managed to track the son all the way out of ruined Charleston (156 square miles, according to wiki) and to the exact right part of dark woodlands, even setting aside the fact that the walk itself would most likely have taken hours.

Very disappointed. Does it seem to anybody else like the producers didn’t deliver what they promised at the end of last season? I think they bit off more than they could chew and left us hanging. There was supposed to be an alliance with a new advanced alien race that would elevate the battle to new kickass heights. Instead we pick up seven months later where we were all waiting for the continuation of that first contact with the new aliens. Why are they building some contraption when they clearly showed up in advanced spacecraft? Lame.

Agree, they’ve got some nice character development going on.

I’m curious to see which direction Matt is going to go, since he appears to be bonding with Pope.

Opposite here. Watching this made me think of just how shoddy Defiance really is.

Well, I think Defiance is shoddy, too. That’s why it’s such a scathing thing to say I’d rather watch it. I guess I just expect more from Falling Skies. At the moment, though, I’m failing to recall a justification for that.

Not to make light of how people feel, but I really like sci-fi so I tend to look at it like pizza in the sense that even pretty crappy pizza is ok. Plus I tend not to be very critical when it comes to entertainment unless it gets to the point where even when I’m trying to deliberately ignore stuff, it just won’t let me. The humanoid aliens in most shows was a little bit of an issue for me at one time, but I understand the practicalities so I can live with that. However I think it was on Voyager where they really pushed the envelope with that one and I had to roll my eyes. But as for things like plot holes, if I’m not going to fall through one, just try to gloss over it an we cool.

One thing I loved about Pushing Daisies is they never let that crap drag on - the characters would actually confront each other and deal with the secrets.

On Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee last week, the one with Sarah Silverman, Seinfeld said they’d wanted to do a sitcom resolution ep - all these elaborate misunderstandings would be cleared up in just a line or two. Would have been hilarious.

All that to say, yeah, I hate when they do that. It’s frequently when I ditch a show.

I just wanted to post this line from the season finale:

Pope: She’s right kid. Compared to the quiet desperation of the suburbs, an alien apocalypse is paradise on earth.

It sure seemed like a short season (even for summer). What did we get? 9 Episodes?

Ten. Next season is supposed to be a whopping 12.
