Fallout 4: Now Playing

I hit level 38, and I’m banking my perk point until the next level when the next ranks of Armorer and Gun Nut open up. I’ve managed to track down nearly two full suits of X-01 armor, but I’ll stick with my T-60E until I hit next level and can fully upgrade armor.

For those who haven’t seen it, I hereby present to you Ballout 4.

Left and right trigger.

Just as a cool point of interest, did anyone else see the double barreled tank in the north west of the map? It’s one of the coolest things I’ve found just laying about. It’s really steam punk looking with two main gun barrels and a dual set of mini-treads on the back. Wish I had taken a screen shot.

I really wish that you could drive some of these military vehicles around like in Fallout Tactics.

It’s an ongoing grievance with me that according to the Fallout games nobody bothers to try and rebuild or even pick shit up off the floor in 200 years. And finally they give you a chance to build yourself, and the parts you build with are all shitty and would do nothing to shelter people from wind or rain. I tore down a maple tree and all I could do with it was make a shitty wall with holes in it? Somebody will surely make a mod for this.

I also hate how bodies remain. If you want to clean up a town, you have to tediously schlep the bodies off to some part of the map you don’t ever go to. But of course if you find you have to come back later to finish looting because you’re overweight, well those bodies disappear, don’t they? I’m looking at you Buffalo Casino in Primm, and Kellog’s hideout!

Another thing: what’s with the other motherfuckers sleeping in my fucking house? I started a family there, and I can’t go off to take a nap because somebody’s always in there having a snooze. My fucking house, where my dreams died 200 years ago. I take it personally.

And you couldn’t afford Ron Pearlman this time? Fallout fans are fond of the guy, hadn’t you heard? Always glad to hear from him again. But fuck 'em, apparently.

What else is bugging me? Missiles weigh less than pills. Grenades have weight, but tactical nukes don’t. A suit of armor with a fresh paint job is still rusty. Lots of ugly shit in a town that can’t be cleared away, like brambles that obscure the floor of a building you just put up. Work with a faction until you realize they’re just sending you on randomly generated make-work quests. You can only rename weapons or armor. Feral ghouls seem to mostly have once been housefraus with goiters who died wearing muumus, and now they move like ninjas on cocaine. Can’t fast travel because some fucking vertibird is hanging around. The Lover’s Embrace perk doesn’t outlast fast travel, so you’d better get it on in some infested ruin if you want to get the bonus. Bugged ‘drop boxes’ in the Railroad quests. There are, what, like three songs on Minuteman Radio? Can’t try to wait unless you’ve got somewhere to sit.

But, you know, I’m really enjoying the game.

Thanks!

Here’s a guide to some of the better early release mods.

You can order them to pick a bed.

He’s there, I haven’t beaten the game yet so I don’t know if he just has a smaller role.

Hmmm. IMDB says he’s Anchorman – of the news cast at the beginning, I suppose.

What aren’t you liking? The crafting stuff?

You don’t have to do that. Maybe a handful of small bits if you want to get on the good side of the Minutemen, but other than that it’s ignorable. Sure, it’s fun to upgrade your weapons, but it’s only a tad more challenging to wait for the nicer weapon drops, and besides, if you aren’t crafting you can spend those perk points on something else.

If you don’t like the new leveling system at all, I can’t help you. But I’m generally happy with it. Especially the fact that you can’t screw yourself over permanently with the wrong kind of build.

Did you like FO3 or NV?

I preferred NV…in fact, I’m sitting in front of my comp right now doing what I’ve always intended to do…and that is download a ton of shit and mod the holy hell out of it.

The main complaint I’ve seen, and I’ve no doubt it would b mine as well, is that as far as the storyline of the game itself goes you really can’t get off track or even really change much.

No karma or loyalty? No way to really change course of the game through dialogue? This was the stuff of Fallout.

Skills and perks were the stuff of Fallout. Yes yes, it’s a new system blah…but look, it wasn’t broken. It had become part of playing a Fallout game.

It appears to have become a loot shooter more or less on rails, set in the Fallout universe.

I’ll play the game, because ooh Fallout. But I’ll wait until next Christmas when it’s on sale and modders have gotten to it.

That’s just not true at all. To be honest, I’ve found the main storyline in all the FO games to be pretty weak. It was helpful to guide you along in case you weren’t sure what else to do, but it wasn’t really the point.

I’m actually at a point now where I have to pick sides, and I really don’t want to. Ironically, this is because the factions are more nuanced than in NV. In NV I just went and killed Caesar and the rest of his camp and didn’t feel bad about it. Here, I know that doing one thing or another will cut me off from certain options, and all of the factions have some kind of reasonable point, so I’d rather not.

So instead I just go exploring. There’s still a huge amount of stuff to visit that’s off the beaten path. Pick a direction and run for a while to see what’s there. No need to have someone else tell you what to do or where to go.

Not six crop plants, six units of food. Most crop plants are .5 so one settler can work up to 12 of those.

The story isn’t really worse than FO3 and the whole “Savior of the Wasteland” schtick. No, it doesn’t have the same choices as FO:NV but that’s because we’re back to Bethesda. It’s not “on rails” either. Metro is a shooter “on rails” (no pun intended) or Tomb Raider 2012 where you had an illusion of RPG mechanics with the perks but in reality you would get them all and only had one real path; a game where you can wander freely and grab or ignore whatever quests you want is not an on rails shooter.

I was originally put off by the settlement nonsense but, since I’ve essentially said “You’re on your own, dudes” I’m having fun just doing the Fallout thing – traipsing across the wasteland and finding things to get into trouble with.

Karma in FO:NV was pointless. I played an “evil” run – siding with Caesar, killing all manner of innocents, devouring their bodies in the city streets and I still barely budged my karma and no one cared at all. Factionwise they cared, sure, but no one was like “He’s an evil monster!” just “He’s an enemy of the NCR”.

Anyone who is lamenting not getting mod components needs to take the (INT) Scrapper perk.

Rank 1: “Waste not, want not! You can salvage uncommon components like screws, aluminum, and copper when scrapping weapons and armor.”

Rank 2: “You can salvage rare components like circuitry, nuclear material, and fiber optics when scrapping weapons and armor. Items with favorited components are highlighted.”

I’ve had rank 2 for a while and I get all kinds of good stuff from scrapping any modded weapon or armor (but especially weapons), and have way more than enough to build any other mod I want/need. The in-world highlighting of useful junk is also super helpful. It even highlights containers. No need to painstakingly remove individual gun mods or for an unrealistic game mod that lets you completely remove the receiver/barrel/grip without replacing them and still have a functional gun. :stuck_out_tongue:

That kinda bothers me a bit too, but I roll with it as it’s part of the ‘post-apocalyptic’ aesthetic. You can kinda/sorta rationalize it by saying making things pretty isn’t a priority when you’ve got to survive constant attacks by raiders/ghouls/mutants and whatnot, but yeah, they’ve had quite a bit of time. Interestingly, there is at least one location in the game that is totally pristine in every way: Cabot House.

No moreso than the other two Bethesda Fallouts. Go to location, get quest from people at location, do quest. Repeat until main storyline is complete or you get bored of exploring.

I pretty much agree with all of the criticisms, but still really enjoy the game for what it is. The quests are definitely overly simplistic and homicidal, the environment is often illogical, and the gunplay is mediocre. If you’re looking for a game with a deep, engaging story with lots of morally ambiguous choices this emphatically is not the game for you.

But what is there is really, really compelling for me. I enjoy scrounging every nook and cranny for junk to craft new toys. It’s not great combat, but it’s still decently fun blasting away the meanies standing between me and my shiny junk. And even if they’re not always logical, piecing together what happened in the various locales is fun and interesting. I feel like the criticisms are often on the negative for the sake of being negative side of things.

What is frustrating, though, is that a lot of the side stories COULD be the basis for really good quests. I don’t think the writing is actually all that bad, as many are claiming, the problem is that the stories aren’t really developed. Avoiding spoilers, Covenant is a legitimately good hook reduced to a bland binary choice. A lot of the raider factions actually have interesting backstories if you read the terminals. There are a ton of ways the player could have played one off the other. I’m doing the Cabot House plot right now and it’s super frustrating that I’ve snooped around and learned a lot about what’s going on, but can’t confront anyone about it. These are all interesting plot hooks on par with the quest seeds from previous Fallouts.

As I said, I enjoy the game for what it is, but I can also understand the frustration with seeing how much more it could have been. I kinda wish it wasn’t fully voiced, a lot of these quests could still be reworked into much more satisfying experiences by a decently skilled writer.

Patches and DLC will hopefully tighten it up and make it better. Weve all gotten used to/spoiled by playing the Game of the Year editions of the earlier games.

Points taken, but I find the number of negative reviews alarming and therefore will put this game on the back burner.

I was stoked to upgrade to a PS4 and grab Fallout 4 this holiday season. But after the reviews and this thread, I’m not so excited to play Fallout 4 now. Oh, I’ll still grab a PS4, but I think Witcher 3 will be the game I start with.

I don’t understand why there are any negative reviews at all, this game is damn near perfect and an instant classic. Easily the best Fallout imo, and I’ve played the originals when they came out. I’ve put over 100 hours on it already since it came out, and that was with taking time out to binge watch all of jessica jones.
