Fallout-style RPG's?

Are there any other Fallout-style RPG’s out there (besides Fallout 2)? I don’t mean necessarily a post-apocalyptic setting, but as far as the character/battle/world interaction systems go. I was hoping Arcanum would be it, but if the demo is any indication, it looks to be a disappointment.

I loved Fallout II, and I would love to know about any other RPG’s styled after that fashion. Without a lot of the bugs, though.

Did you ever play the Fallout demo? It was a lot worse than the Arcanum demo, if that’s what you want to go by. But Fallout turned out to be a fantastic game. I’m expecting the same from Arcanum.

But the closest you’ll otherwise get to Fallout are the Infinity Engine games – Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment. Of them, Torment is hands down the best. It’s probably the best CRPG ever made, and only Arcanum seems poised to upstage it.

Baldur’s Gate I and II, from what I hear, are KRRRLAP!

If you can find Crusader: No Remorse or Crusader: No Regret, buy them immediately!. Furthermore, if you find System Shock I or II, buy them immediately!

BGI and BGII have a lot less interaction with the world than the Fallout series. There is a reputation stat that goes up and down when you do good or bad things, but about all it does is affect prices unless you let it get to extremes - in the top 10% of it’s range evil party members will leave and if it gets under a certain point you will constantly be attacked by guards and pretty much have to reload. They are great games, but in a different way - think a cross between Fallout and Final Fantasy 7, with an AD&D setting and a RTS-like combat system.

I know people who have played the full version of Arcanum - it’s been available as warez for a while since the English version has been finished for months, they are delaying it’s release until they get foreign language versions done so they can do a worldwide simultaneous release. Everbody says it’s awesome, like Fallout 2 but more so, is even more open-ended and your actions have an even bigger effect on the game. Playing an evil character is a lot easier and more fun than in the Fallout series as well.

I heard that Planescape: Torment is pretty good as well. Different decisions you make throughout the game change the way your character develops in a big way. You might want to give it a try, I want to but I can never find a copy.

They aren’t as good as Fallout, but they’re in the same league.

Alas, it didn’t get the sales it deserved, and while it recieved great praise from the critics, some subnerds whined that there was too much talk and not enough action, to the point that since Team Torment started working on the upcoming title Torn, they have taken pains to reassure gamers that Torn won’t be anywhere near as deep or intelligent.

At one point, though, I saw Torment being sold in a two-for-one deal at Best Buy. It’s still out there.

I immediately thought of Diablo II upon reading the OP, but some of the other posts made me realize that D2 is a lot more closed than these other games (your actions don’t affect what people think of you, the world isn’t quite as full, etc.) That being said, I’ve heard good things about the game Johnny Angel mentioned, Torn. It’s being built around a similar character/skill/gameplay system as the Fallout games, but has more meat in the game to sink your teeth into. Sounds like a larf to me.

BG I didn’t quite grab me as much as FO 2. The pacing was wretchedly slow and your characters only had 6 levels. The possible number of different items in the game was way too small. Mostly, the lack of a run feature killed the game for me. trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge Look, a tree. trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge Look, another tree. trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge Hey, a peasant. trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge trudge Hm. You could always dig up a copy of Wasteland.

I played Torment back when it was new, and it was great. The only one really to come close for me. I played wasteland back in the day and probably still have it somewhere. The Crusader games were great too, but I’d hardly call them RPG’s (then I wouldn’t call Diablo an RPG either). Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale left me underwhelmed. I’ll still give Arcanum a chance and hopefully it exceeds my expectations. Any other suggestions?

Never played Fallout but someone suggested Diablo 2. There’s an older game called Darkstone, which is similar to the Diablo series. In Darkstone, you start with two PCs instead of one and the eventual hireling. Cnet has a Darkstone demo, give it a try.

Or Twilight 2000, for that matter.
