For speculation on the Fallout game series, although tie-ins and how they interact is fair game. Specifically, Fallout 5, possible sequels and sub games such as Fallout Shelter and other computer game based speculation. DLC, fan created mods, and re-releases (remasters) are fair game as well.
So we don’t clutter the Fallout TV show thread for people who aren’t or don’t intend to play the game.
Fallout 5 will definitely be related to the show, and according to Todd Howard, the show is canon. In fact he asked the show’s producers to avoid certain plot elements because they would be spoilers for the next game. Also mentioned it’s still only in a rudimentary outline stage and is still “years away” from release.
I just assume it is Obsidian’s next project once Avowed is wrapped up later this year. Microsoft controls both entities, presumably Obsidian doesn’t have someone else in the pipeline, Obsidian did New Vegas and plenty of talent from Black Isle. Bethsoft is busy with ES6 and trying to save Starfield so it makes sense to give it to another team.
That’s probably wishful thinking. The fact that New Vegas is considered by many to be the best in the series seems to be a bit of a sore point to the Bethesda folks, and everything that I have heard from Todd Howard and others indicates that they have absolutely no desire to let Obsidian have another crack at the series. Microsoft owns both companies now, so they could theoretically force the issue, and a lot of fans really want that to happen. But I don’t think that it is likely.
Aside - thank to @What_Exit for the catch and forum change, I was too busy doing the spin-off to prevent the TV series thread from going sideways and didn’t click it over to the proper forum.
Hopefully the show gives us a couple of seasons so with the realistic idea of Fallout 5 being still years away, the “synergy” of tv/game is still a viable idea… the show driving people to the game will happen whether its season 2 or season 5.
There is an active going Fallout game that is seeing a boost from the show…Fallout 76. And only the most out of touch Fallout “fans” still deride that game and nearly all of their complaints are things that haven’t been relevant to the game in YEARS. The reality is, it’s not for everyone but that’s taste not design or implementation.
Microsoft might be pushing Bethesda to fast-track FO5…but in gaming “fast-tracking” is still a process that is going to take years. No to mention the money cost in a time where Microsoft is closing successful studios to make the line go up. Will the juice be actually worth the squeeze for them?
Even before this, most gaming insiders said Fallout 5 would be the later part of this decade at best. So are we talking est arrival was 2028 and is now 2026?
I’m personally surprised that there hasn’t been an effort to do a remaster of one of the older properties, or, as a side note, a slightly more detailed and elongated full length DLC for F4 as an example.
I know that they’re finally pivoting away from the ancient gambryo/Creation underpinnings that have been limping along for far too long, but since as I understand it, it’s still what is working under the hood for F76, they could shift assets.
Ah, who am I kidding, they’d rather throw that money at F76 and sell more Atom Store Content / Fallout 1st than one time purchases of a DLC.
If they wanted to do it on the cheap though, they could arrange to buy out Team Folon and take over the assets for the very ambitious Fallout 4 Mod for London, finish it, and release it as “official” DLC.
