Fallout TV Show coming to Amazon, April 2024 (No spoilers for at least a week)

I definitely feel some inspiration from Fallout 3, though.

And her search for her father feels like the search for the son in Fallout 4.

Just watch out for chickens!

I thought that too. I primarily have knowledge of only F4 and there was plenty that felt very familiar, despite the fact that the show takes place out west (I did play New Vegas a bit right after F4 but I had Fallout fatigue at that point and didn’t pursue it very far). Lucy seems like the sole survivor character from F4, despite the fact she’s not 1st generation. The town of ‘Filly’ felt a lot like Diamond City.

They’re hewing pretty close to the source material in many ways.

Fwiw, Filly reminds me more of Megaton in FO3, with the multiple tiers of walkways on the built up junk walls and the crater-like feeling when standing on the ground level. But no atom bomb stuck in the ground.

But most of the set dressing is pure FO4.

Settlement building is going to grind the whole thing to a crawl!

Yeah, that was my first thought, “Hey! It’s Megaton!”

There’s some “controversy” because they seem to be retconning the New Vegas/Obsidian plotline while making acknowledgements to the same setting in favor of Bethesda’s vision.

Well, it’s been 15 years since FO:NV. A lot can happen in the interval.

But I’m curious what ending of that game they will consider canonical?

I’m conscious of spoilers, but there is a dated scene that seems to suggest the plot of NV was waylaid before it even occurs, and the series plot is diverged.

All the talking heads associated with the official material seem (to me) to say that prior canon is conserved.

That means that some variation of Fallout New Vegas did occur, and one of the possible game endings would be backstory if the show’s story goes into the Mojave.

I binged the whole show, ending tonight. I’ve never played the game Fallout although I have some familiarity with the look and the lore. Perhaps that’s an advantage - I just took the story on its own merits. I’m sure there will be a few fanboys screaming THEY RUINED IT!!! because it didn’t slavishly follow any version of the game, but it’s a different medium and you have to adapt for the change.

I didn’t have any trouble following the story, and nothing blew my suspension of disbelief (allowing that this is a science fantasy/comic book genre, not hard SF). I was entertained, which after all is the point of such a show.

Here’s a pretty solid review of the show from a Youtuber I enjoy (minor spoilers starting around the 11 minute mark);

Well, except for the fact that they carefully deleted every mention of China in favor of generic “commies”…

Agreed with all of this.

My takeaway after finishing it was that it was a fun series to watch and that the sets were eerily reminiscent of the video games (although I haven’t played Fallout 1 or 2). I found the Ghoul’s missing nose to be a bit distracting though; I don’t think there was any shot of the nose where I forgot that visual effects were being used.

I hope there’ll be another season!

The Verge has an in-universe product review for the Pip-Boy 3000.

Amazon has greenlit season 2.

Todd Howard is on record as telling Amazon to keep stuff out of the show because said stuff is too similar to what Bethesda plans for Fallout 5.

…or did they just not need to say “China” because in-universe talking about the “reds” really only means one thing?

My complaint is they seem to be right now soft-balling how AWFUL pre-war America was. I think we’ll see more pre-war stuff as Coop becomes more disillusioned… but will they go so far as to reference or show the riots, the internment camps, the martial law in some areas?

The one communist item I saw was a satellite that had “CCCP” emblazoned on the side. And when a yao guai appeared, Knight Titus called it a “bear”.
