Probably because enough people have asked about it over the years that he felt he should make a statement, and given a choice between saying “It’s ‘laugh and’” or saying “yeah, it’s ‘effing’ and those idiots at Fox let me get away with it for three seasons, ha-ha-haaaaaaa!” he went with the latter.

…cry? Why would we be lucky that there’s a man who makes us cry? But if it’s “laugh and cry,” that makes more sense. I always thought that the way the baby says it, very forced and sinister, was part of the premise.

I agree. A family man who makes us cry is not a good thing to have. A family man who makes us laugh and cry is.
