I like to keep the roster sizes on the small side. Say, 16 players, if the number of starting positions is as I outline below. Make people sweat over who they should start, and allow them to bitch when they pick the wrong one (my personal specialty). That’s half the fun.
1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 or 2 RB/WR
I prefer picking individual defensive players (3) over team D’s, but I’ve done it both ways. They should only get points for full tackles, sacks, interceptions, fumbles forced and fumbles recovered.
6 points for any touchdown.
I usually modify kicking points so any field goal up to 50 yards is 3, any beyond 50 is 4, period.
You don’t want to mess with the receptions. Just yards and points. (And minus points for fumbles lost.)
Any more teams than 4 in the playoff, it starts meaning a whole lot less. Like the NBA or NHL. That would make it two weeks.
Will you be emailing people from the Sandbox league rundown list? This is only going to fly if all those people cross over, and we get an on-line draft somehow worked out.
Thanks, Munch! The Continental Drifters (the football version, as opposed to the kick-ass baseball version) are in.
…and use the e-mail in my profile instead of the Yahoo! one that the team is registered under. I’ll get the yahoo mail, too–just not nearly as quickly.
…and it looks like I’m up against ShibbOleth’s Unskilled Hacks first for a grudge-filled rematch of the two poundings the Hacks delivered to the Drifters last year!
Munch: I created a new Yahoo! ID that’s more indicative of my Board name* and added a second Unskilled Hacks (v 2.0). Could you remove the first Hacks so I don’t hold a slot for a real team? Sorry to do this, but my other ID had people sometimes thinking that I was Sua Sponte.
*Some other yutzes already grabbed Shibb and shibboleth as a Yahoo ID.

Munch has wielded his mighty sword of “REMOVE COACH”. I didn’t ban you on account of your children. I’d hate to see you lose face in front of them (imagine the horror of seeing a faceless father!).
Shibb, got any opinion on the league settings? I’m a’staying out of it, so there’s no 5-5 tie.
Well – I’m not having any luck getting into the yahoo league. Keep getting “server error”. I did go ahead and set up the pick 'em league like we had last year. The details are:
Group ID: 8943
Group Name: The Straght Picks
Group Password: cecil
Spriteous, keep trying! IIRC you were formidable and worthy competition last season.
And Meek already had set up a pick’em league, there’s a thread out here somewhere. Although two leagues would double my chances of winning, so maybe it’s not a bad idea.
and Munch, thanks for removing me but leaving me my face. If you’d actually seen my face you’d know that you were doing nobody any favors on that one, though.
As for settings, I was fine with Milo’s scheme from last year. I think that’s more or less what he was proposing again. As I am already dealing with some huge changes in my real-life fantasy league (oxymoron alert!), I don’t mind having some stability here.
Spiritus, keep trying. 3 people have found their way in, so you must just be having some Yahoo# hiccups. Yahoo& has these problems occasionally, I’d guess they say me temporarily remove Shibb’s face. Hideous as it was, the alternative was just fat and gristle. And that’s no good.
Worthy? Hell, if I had kept Priest Holmes (and/or Garrison Hearst) and dumped Fred Taylor in week 2 I coulda been a contender. As it was I won the trophy for most boneheaded moves by a manager in one season.
Well, I can’t join Meek’s league for teh same reason that I can’t join this one – server error. Soemone needs to punk a Yahoo SA for me. Oh well, I’ll leave my pick 'em league open until I can join the one already started. If others have shown interest before then, I’ll go ahead and run a second league. It’s not much work, plus I get to exercise the lovely power to ban lazy bums who join a league and then don’t play teh game.
I’m on the fence about passing TDs. Personally I favor 4 points, but every other league I’m playing in this year gives 6 points because Yahoo upped the default. Playoffs should be 2 weeks. I think there should definitely be more players on the starting roster… at least 1 WR/RB spot should be added. Unless we’re talking about actually having 14 or more teams, and even 14 is iffy for a lineup this small. I don’t support points for receptions. I do support team defense.
I’m in – hopefully the football incarnation of my WL’s Warriors moniker, cheesy as it is, will be able to perform better than the constant second-banana spot I’ve got in our baseball league (although I seem to have lost my firm grip on even that dubious honor of late).
Spiritus Mundi and anyone else who’s interested, I linked the original Pick’Em thread on the first page of this thread. It’s… here to save you the work.
My email is in my profile here and viewable in the Yahoo league. As I said earlier I’m down to do our draft offline however you guys decide.
One last thing – are we still gonna do the sandbox game?
Yahoo – I’m in. Yahoo finally let down it’s guard.
As for rules, my preferences are:[ul]
[li]6 points per passing TD–it overvalues QB-Receiver combinations, but I hate making a 1-yd naked bootleg more valuable than a 40-yd strike to the corner.[/li][li]FG max out at 4 points, whether 40 or 50 yds is unimportant, but 5 points for an FG is too much no matter how high Gramatica jumps afterward.[/li][li]I strongly prefer individual defensive players, but I’ll console myself to team D if that is the consensus. I just find individual performers to provide a more balanced draft pool for any league over 10, and I also like the more complex decisions it engenders. Team D generally becomes a no-brain activity after draft day.[/li][li]Starting rosters absolutely need to be expanded by 1 offensive skill position. Personally, I favor QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, RB/WR/TE, RB/WR/TE, K, D, D, D. Making TE an optional position evens out another position of very uneven production. If TE is a required position, I favor: QB, RB, WR, WR, TE, RB/WR, RB/WR, K, D, D, D.[/li][li]16 players to a team is a bit large, for my tastes given the current position breakdowns. With team D, I would prefer 14-15 man rosters even if we increase the skill position starters by one. With individual defenders, I would say an 18 man is probably about the right size, though I could live with 19.[/li][/ul]
Of course, the above are simply my preferences. I will happily dominate this league no matter what ruleset is chosen.
BTW – I don’t know of any other live draft hosting sites, but what’s to stop us simply setting up a chat room in ICQ/AIM. Both have free client installs for anyone not already connected, and it owuld allow us complete freedom in choosing a draft day/time.
FTR I will express my opinion on a variety of the topics that are up for discussion. Ignore or not as you will.
I disagree strongly with the idea of making the TE optional. The fact that talent at the position is spread pretty thin, I feel, is a positive, not a negative. I agree strongly that there must be another offensive position added. I should clarify my position on team defense – I support using team defense because I’m lazy.
I hadn’t added it up, but Spiritus Mundi is also right about the 16 man roster being too roomy. With our current, smaller starting lineups I’d suggest 14. If we expand the roster by one, 15 should work (that would mirror the yahoo default settings), if by 2, maybe 16 or 17. I agree about the FGs – no 5-pointers. How they pay out aside from that I don’t really care.
I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of starting 2 team defenses per week, but that wouldn’t work with 14 teams in the league.
And of course using an ICQ/AIM chat room to draft seems like the way to go.
If people are up for ICQ/AIM, y’all are going to have to give me a quick tutorial. I’ll have to schlep myself over to the school computer cluster, and do it there (that’s where I’d have to do it anyway, so no worries).
As for starting rosters, I will chime in, and say that I’m strongly in favor of a TE-req. league. Anything else is fine.
