No, not those kind of fantasies, you preverts, save that for our next club meeting. I mean Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery, Unicorns, Dragons, etc. Now, I do D&D (not too much, anymore, but I still like to get together with old friends & roleplay), SCA, Fantasy books, and some Computer Roleplaying games (NOT online).
Do YOU do any of this also? If so, why or why not(anymore)?
How about Live action RP, or Vampire, or “evercrack” or others?
Confession is good for the soul. Be good and I’ll start a thread about those “other” fantasies…
I was part of the Adrian Empire for several years. The Adrian Empire was a group of people who left the SCA about 15 years ago, and thought they could do it better. They grew to pretty decent proportions around Southern California, and they held large “wars” a few times a year, along with monthly meetings and camping out at small Renaissance Faires during the summer. It was fun for a while, but too many people were tied up in politics and many of the monthly meetings turned into big discussions that made C-SPAN seem interesting. As things went along, fewer Renaissance Faires wanted the group around, either due to a few problem alcoholics in the group, or because several of the members did not exactly abide by proper attire for the time period (Yeah! Polyester was HUGE in the 1500’s!) A combination of all this stuff, along with the fact that the whole scene was just getting cluttered with too many alcoholic, violent types just turned me off to it all.
I go to Renaissance Faires now and again, still, but it’s just not the same since I’ve got so much else going on in my life now. I have fond memories of when it was fun, but, sad to say, I grew out of it.
clears her throat and stands up Hello I am TopazAntares everyone says “Hey Topaz” And I have a Role Playing addiction. blinks at everyone’s look Oh… looks sheepish Wrong club right? Well I’ll just tell you what I do.
As most people know here I role play (I mean they SHOULD know I mention it like every other post… well not every other but I DO mention it). To put it simply I FFRP (Free Form Role Play) On-line in chat. The Realm I (well my c’s) live in is known as Lycosia and is set in Lycos Random chat. Its a fairly strange realm with everything from Orks with war bikes and bolter guns. (Well Ork I should say) to Faeries and Elves, Humans and Vampires anything is possible. Even a whole ton of made up beings that come from their players imagination. Like Neir or the Phantom Lords. I also play with a little group within the group who play V:tM. Its quite interesting.
(Although we have our share of problems… GCers {General Chatters}, disagreements over deaths {We have no moderators we each are our own GM} and just general anarchy and such.)
i was big into D&D and then AD&D in High School, now though, with a lack for friends that enjoy the same, i only get to play online role playing games. as far as fantasy IRL such as Vampire… i hang out sometimes at goth/industrial clubs that remind me so much of my high school days, except theres more color in my wardrobe lately. i suppose i just grew bored of it also, moved on to actually join the army and have my real adventures, came out of the army and began rock climbing, hiking, and just plain doing it all IRL.
That sort of thing always sounded interesting to me, but I never knew anyone to play with, or even to teach me. Sigh. Oh, well, maybe some day, when I have free time again…
So, you’d have to count me as one who never has done this stuff, though I do know a few things about it. Does that make me a wannabe?
I played Everquest since Augest and tomorrow I get the new Vampire game. I never have done pencil and paper role playing cause none of my friends like it.
I used to do online RP from Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time books, although I stopped about a year ago and don’t have much of a desire to go back. It was fun at first, but a lot of politics tends to go on in those groups and really takes away from the fun playing pretend.
Purple: I happen to know there is a lot of Gaming in your area. My suggestion, is to find a hobby shop that carries a lot of Fantasy Role Playing (FRP) stuff, and ask one of the workers about a D&D game you can sit in on. Stress you want an ADULT game, that is heavy on ROLEPLAYING. They will set you up. I recommend D&D as it is the most common system, and the players are usually nice to newbies. None of thet “politics” stuff that the Live action/Vampire etc folk do.
When you do this, contact me on a thread & I’ll email you or post you thru some pointers. Try it, Life’s too short not to.
Also hit a “rennfaire”. Or maybe a local SCA event.
…I got interested in the SCA while living out West a few years ago and attended a number of fighter practices. Unfortunately, most of the folks I encountered there were very standoffish and too politically motivated. The nicest people there were the ‘live steel’ fighters, but they weren’t even in the SCA; they just practiced on the same night so they wouldn’t stand out too badly in a park that was in a dicey part of town.
But that was another time and place. Maybe it’s time to try the waters again. Makes mental note to check out local groups
I used to play D&D, then AD&D when it came out. Then CyberPunk stuff, I’ve played Marvel Super Heros, DC’s version, GURPS (God, the wild card universe SUCKED) and Amber: The Diceless RPG. Love the last one, if I want a spell to hold back the hordes of hell, summon a gate to bring my friends in to help, and a ham sandwitch while I wait, I can do it in one spell.
Vampire was… dull. I never went above base normal, yet knew enough at the end of 6 months to upset the whole Live ACtion scene here in town. Dull.
By day I roleplay a level 7 corporate professional. Every morning I actually get decked out in full garb and head out in period transportation.
We’ve got a pretty good sized group that plays along recreating the intricacies of a competitive, capitalistic economy with all of the excitement, stress and risk that is involved.
I’m sure it sounds really perverse to some of you, but that’s because you haven’t heard the best part - merchants around my area are actually accepting the “money” we make and trade in the game! Little do they know, it’s not worth anything. Fools!
I’m pretty stressed in my current adventure, so I’m thinking about introducing high-tech weaponry into the game to spice things up around the office. Something tells me that will change the whole dynamic, though. . .
I am currently involved in a long-running (two years +) campaign of AD&D that actually started out as a Runequest campaign. I never played in high school but my husband did and he got me started a couple of years ago. We have a group of 6, including the DM.
I was big into AD&D in HS and College. After that, I could find no one to play. As it turns out, my SO and his friends play (I’m not sure what game it is), but whatever it is you need to have a PhD in Math to play. I played with them for a few weeks until that unfortunate incident where I killed almost everyone off. Since then, they’ve started a new campaign, and I’ve stayed out of it.
But I’d love to get back into one - preferably an AD&D or something very similar.
crosses arms tightly and looks up with sunken eyes
Started with AD&D, you know, everybody did…Then we got heavy into Cyberpunk, got shot up pretty bad but survived, man, we survived. Than some one showed us Shadowrun, then Whitewolf, man, and then…whispers Star Wars. That went on for years, man. We were one of Cracken’s Special Ops teams, it was us, man, we got the plans for the Death Star and passed them on to the Bothans…it was us… wanders away muttering
Boy am I backwards. Like evilbeth, I never played growing up, but my husband got me started on AD&D and I’ve never had such a good time or felt so creative. We’re definitely not ‘by-the-book’ players. My son is the age the game was initially designed for and I think the stinker has memorized the Monstrous Manual. What a rat.
Out here in the middle of nowhere there’s not a lot of games going on so we always jump at the chance to do some quality RPing.
