Struck me as kind of odd that he would bolt to avoid arrest and… rent a snowmobile in Montana? That seems a tad vacationy for a fugitive.
I think people are assuming he was intending to flee into Canada, which makes sense.
I believe he was in Glacier National Park, which crosses the boarder with Canada.
" Glacier National Park borders Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada—the two parks are known as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park and were designated as the world’s first International Peace Park in 1932. "
There are easier ways to get into Canada, not that it would help him anyway since his extradition would be pretty pro forma the moment he was arrested and it doesn’t seem like he had the money or the wherewithal to set up a fake identity or live underground or in the wilderness for an extended period.
And he couldn’t even fight extradition on the basis of likely execution, since Minnesota doesn’t have capital punishment.
Had he been running across a desert into Mexico and fell into a sinkhole, maybe…
Lester had been on thin ice for 10 episodes and should not have stopped.
Yeah, and he was usually pretty good thinking on his feet, considering. But in this case, he should have gotten off his feet and skooched across the ice, instead.
Does anyone have any idea of how Lester got from the small home where he shot Malvo to that ice covered lake, where he died? Would he have likely fled immediately after shooting Malvo?
Or would he have likely faced the police and answered their questions and then gotten some money and important personal possessions together and then fled? I’m asking because I have not seen any discussion or any mention of what he likely did. I’d also really like to hear from anyone who has an idea of what the smart thing would have been for him to do and what would have been a mistake.
There has also been some discussion of Lester’s brother and what would likely happen to him. But it has been quite scattered. Does anyone have any idea as to whether his brother was likely convicted of any crime(s) or if he was just sitting in jail and how long it would have taken for him to get out of jail (assuming that he ever does get out of jail).
Personally, I could imagine any outcome being possible. Lester’s brother may never be let out of jail. He could eventually be convicted of one or more murders or he could eventually be exonerated and set free. But the important question is how long would he have to spend in prison before being set free?
I suppose this is just idle curiousity and since this is not a RL situation, it really can’t matter a whole lot. I’m just curious what would likely happen to someone in a similar situation.
I’d also love to know what would likely become of Lester’s sister-in-law. Despite having a rather nasty streak to her (as well as a very shallow and overly-important self-image based on her looks), I’d have liked to see her life wind up as a happy one - maybe together with someone who would really care for her and would help her to be a better person.
Gus shot Malvo, Lester didn’t. The police, at that exact time, probably didn’t have any evidence to arrest him and released him from the station at which point he took off. Smarter than matching wits with Molly like he did for the last year, especially now that he doesn’t have Bill on his side.
Lester called the police when Malvo was at his house, so presumably they showed up soon thereafter. They would have found evidence of the gunfight between Lester and Malvo, not to mention two dead FBI agents behind his house. And he would have been talking to someone from the FBI, not one of those bumbling local cops. At this point, I can’t see how he can deny a relationship with Malvo and they can show what they know about Lester’s connections to Malvo.
Malvo heard Lester talking to 911 - we have no evidence to suggest that Lester actually called 911 - he was setting a trap and using himself for bait. He did shoot @ Malvo, but presumably missed.
I would say at that point, Lester ‘ran’ - but we have no idea of anything between that point and his ice breaking moment later.
He hit Malvo in the leg, quite distinctly.
I think yes, he fled immediately after the gunfight, and was presumably a hunted fugitive for a while before being cornered in the snow. It’s hard to see any other way it could have played out.
OK, even if Lester didn’t really call 911, there would be two missing FBI agents, who had apparently told their superiors that they were going to Bemidji. That’s going to bring all sorts of attention to the area. And wouldn’t the used car guy talk, and tell the police where Malvo shot the agents in cold blood? So certainly the authorities would have gone to Lester’s house and found the bodies. And they would certainly be reconstructing the events that brought Malvo to Bemidji. They might even figure out that the personal trainer didn’t commit “suicide by cop”.
Oops. Sorry. My mistake. I meant Lester - not Gus. Thank you for pointing that out.
If Lester didn’t flee, there’s no way he didn’t spend a good long time being interrogated and by a competent US Attorney or senior FBI agent. And as I understand a “material witness warrant” they could have held Lester indefinitely. So he must have fled immediately.
I suspect they’d reverse the Murder conviction, and it would be time served for the weapon charges.
This is an excellent observation- the ‘thin ice’ parallel hadn’t even occurred to me.
What? I didn’t get that she (Lester’s sister-in-law) was nasty- as far as she knows her husband was obsessed with Lester’s wife, and probably cheated on her. It’s not surprising that she’d be a little bitter. “Very shallow and overly-important self-image based on her looks”- huh? She was an attractive woman but didn’t flaunt it; could you be thinking of Hess’ widow?
I do like how Gus’ daughter seemed to quickly take to Molly. They seem like a happy little family. It wouldn’t have made sense to work any step-mom/bratty teen drama into the storyline, but it looks like she’s as close to Molly as if she was her birth mother.
Malvo stepped on the clothes covered bear trap…Ewww
A very mature kid who longed for a mother and knew it and she desperately wanted her Dad to be happy. A teenage girl doesn’t usually like her mother anywhere near as much as she liked Molly.
Do you remember how she spoke about once being Miss ABC? (where ABC is the name of some county or small city). Do you remember when she pointed to her body as if to say to Lester, “Look how beautiful I am. A normal man just does not step out on a wife as beautiful as I am.”
I suppose I could be wrong. But do you recall those two scenes? If I’m mistaken about those scenes then I guess I’m wrong about her attitude. But I have a pretty clear recollection that is the way she thought about herself. She thought she was just too good for most men because of the way she looked. (but those looks would be gone very quickly and, then what?)
Yes, and then Lester shot him in the leg, then Lester tried to keep shooting him but was out of bullets.
