Poor Farrah - RIP. At least she is not suffering any longer. :*(
RIP.
She made feathered hair da bomb.
Man, this makes me feel old.
Story here
Damn, that’s too bad. She may have not been the world’s greatest actor, and may have been the subject of too may “train-wreck-in-a-dress” stories, but she had beauty and charisma. I remember her famous poster from the 70s, and she and Lee Majors had seemed to have a fairy tale marriage in better days. Not all her choices worked out, but she won respect for her movie “The Burning Bed.” I saw her on the Comedy Central roast of William Shatner and she looked absolutely terrible. I wouldn’t wish cancer on anybody, it seems like such a terrible way to go. Her family has my sympathy.
Very sad day in Whoville.
Rest in peace, Dreamgirl.
it’s on CNN right now, and CNN.com seems to have updated as well.
I’m too young to have ever really appreciated most of what she did, but there’s no way I can ever forget the famous picture of her in that swimsuit.
RIP Farrah, you’ll be missed.
Did she and Ryan O’Neal live together? I knew they had gotten back together after a long separation but wasn’t sure if it they moved back in together.
Not a straight line or set up, I promise: is there anythink linked to anal cancer as far as lifestyle or gender/ethnicity or whatever? Or is it just a genetic happenstance? It’s not a form of cancer that’s talked about much.
I was glad that her son was allowed to see her before she died. I’m not a huge fan but I hate seeing anybody become a shell of their former self, especially at an age like 59 (way too young).
59 when she got it, 62 when she passed. Yes, far too early.
Wow. She was on an episode of Ally McBeal a few years ago and she looked great.
Looks like there can be a genetic predisposition, that and diet.
My grandfather has it, according to the docs it’s genetic roulette (ie, there has to be a genetic component but so far it hasn’t been identified and hasn’t been linked to ethnicity or anything) and also linked to diet. Gramps would eat nothing but proteins, left to his own devices - well, the fat to fry it, I guess.
And after all the time I spend holding her poster up with just one hand . . .
Man, bummer.
Now I feel old. Or I feel my own mortality. Or something. Not sure why as she’s not my generation but whatever.
Anyhow, bummer.
There were two threads on this, and I’ve merged 'em.
A lot of times it is just random bad luck (like so many cancers) but having an HPV infection seems to raise the risk of anal cancer - just as having HPV increases a woman’s risk of getting cervical cancer.
That’s why some doctors recommend that people who engage in receptive anal sex (
i.e., men who have sex with men) should get an “anal pap smear” (analogous to the pap smear women have done to check for cervical cancer)…
Not to be distasteful, but I have an image of producers at CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and every small town and big market station all putting together the clips of her life and rounding up everyone from Kate Jackson to “the man who has anal cancer” to talk about her life and legacy only to all say “OH HOLY FUCKING SHIT!” upon learning Michael Jackson’s dead. Poor Farrah: her death was major news for a few hours and then she was trumped big time.
If you think about it, she was basically the first Pam Anderson. She was famous for being nipply on a poster and a starring on a hit TV show for 1 season. She then spent the rest of her career on the very periphery of showbiz, but 30 plus years after her defining moments (all two of them), she managed to stay famous while doing almost nothing of note. I’ve always wondered how the gods of fame decide who will be remembered and who won’t.
