As you can see, my present eyeglasses are less than flattering. I have been long been getting comments about how “out of style” they are. Plus, everyone tells me they are “huge.” LOL Not thick, just too large in diameter.
I, otherwise, look pretty much the same as when the photo was taken. Well, the time has come for me to get new lenses and frames! I need some fashionable advice. Ladies, help me out! You have a better fashion sense than a lot of guys.
I went to http://www.Lenscrafters.com where they have a nifty little online “fashion advisor.” According to that, there several factors in determining frame styles: eye color, hair color, skin tone, and face shape. After taking their test, it says they recommend “aviator” or “geometric” frames. Umm ok, whatever those are.
I agree that you should not get glasses that touch your cheeks. good rule of thumb. You should go in to the lenscrafters or wherever and bug the sales people. Tell them you need help, and they will usually help you.
In general, though, it looks like you would look great in a set of small oval glasses. Go rimless for fun! However, if you are the kind of guy who keeps his glasses for a long time (I won’t comment on how obvious it is that you do…wait, that is a comment…Oops), you may not want rimless frames, because they are less sturdy. Lucky for you, solid plastic frames are very stylish. Guess makes some nice ones.
Take a fashionable (yet sensible) friend with you when you go. Post an “after” picture!
I went to the Lenscrafters site, and though it wouldn’t load the page with the frame choices on it, the picture of the guy on the “choose your style” page was wearing some nifty frames.
Thanks for the advice, keep it coming… and for the record, the glasses I am wearing now, I have had since May 18, 1996!!! Damn, that is bad!  :o
I will try to get a new pic for submission to the SD People Pages, after my manly makeover… new specs, new haircut!!
MSK…take it from one that called to the masses of the SD to help me out with my eye glass selection before.
Take one or two people that know you, your style and have some fashion sense. I ended up doing that and ended up with glasses that weren’t even described on Lens Crafters site. My family dug it, my friends were amazed and my friend that went with me really helped out because he was there to crinkle his nose and nod when a pair looked right.
Generally, find a pair that suit you and your lifestyle. If you aren’t trendy then go a little conservative. You have dark hair so virtually any color frame would work for you.
Remember that glasses are an investment not a fashion statement. What’s hip and hot today is out next year and spending upwards of $200 should be enough to remind you to look for a pair that will last you a while.
Go for smaller, personally I prefer metal frames. Luxottica has a lot of excellent styles (many under other names too). I like my titanium frames, they are lightwieght.
Do yourself a favor though…ask them if there are any color variations with the lens. I found out, too late just after their guarantee, that I have a slight green tint to this pair. As a sometimes graphics person, I find I am sticking my face to the monitor when doing some graphics…
I do prefer metal frames. I am going to stay away from tinted lenses by all means. I hope to be able to afford the kind that are extra “white.” That is, many tintless lenses still have a “yellow” tinge to them, and I know there are some kinds made to do away that effect.
I agree they are an investment. I hope to find something both lasting yet flattering, but not too “trendy.”
I love the idea about taking a friend with a fashion sense, but I honestly don’t have anyone I can take. I am asking around to those I can think of, but no luck so far. I’ll keep trying. I will be shopping around at several eyeglass places for the best buy and style. Hopefully some have consultants there for matching frames to faces.
I also will be inquiring my optician about contacts, although I don’t think I would like all the hassle involved with those. I know they have daily disposables, but if they are costly, forget it.
MSK, there was little notice of my slight tint…keep that in mind.
Ask them if there is any color variation at all. I noticed it on a birthday celebration for me. I was at brunch with my family. Huge windows were looking to the east at this swanky place my parents go to. It was early afternoon with fluffy clouds but still alot of blue in the sky, I happened to look up over my glasses and noticed that the color of the sky was different.
It’s so slight I don’t notice it in regular life, like driving or whatever but I notice it when I am trying to appreciate colors.
I have very simple lenses. Scratch proof, UV protection etc…I assume that the combination of my need for virtually maintanence free lenses is my problem.
Anyhow, here’s my opinion on lenses for you.
Look for a lighter color frames…You might look like a middle east terrorist if you get dark frames. I have seen it with many people who look similar to you. No offense my friend, please…but with your darker features you need to play on your eyes.
Frames that hit halfway or just barely above your eyebrows, and are about 1/4 of the length of your face or less. Silver might be okay but you might try some of the other colors (except gold). Plastic is not in…besides they break easy. Good for sunglasses though.
Try a squarish to ovalish kind of look (combine the two if you will). According to your pictures I would see you more as an oval face…but it’s hard to tell with a picture.
Anyhow, that’s my best interpretation with buying glasses from a picture and from my experience.
I will have new glasses in just a few short hours!
The saleslady helped me out a lot to choose a style that was right for me, and I made the final choice. I will try to get a picture out asap, but it may be awhile, as I don’t have a digicam, scanner, or webcam.
Anyways, I chose a very small frame. The new ones are about one-third of the size my current “Harry-Carray-Old-Navy-Old-Lady” glasses. I never realized these old things were so freakin’ gigantic! They should’ve come with windshield wipers.
The new style is a squarish-oval shape and a “coffee” color, which goes very well with my hair and goatee color. The shape doesn’t alter the shape of my face but instead, compliments it quite well. I am so excited. As soon as I get my pic, I will get it up online.
I be stylin’ baby! Yeah! Whoooohooo I should go clubbin’ tonight just to see if I get any positive reactions from the ladies.
BTW Techchick, I made sure I inquired about & avoided any tinting.
