Fashions You Wish Would Make a Comeback

Hats with Veils. Who needs a facelift or Botox when you can have an elegant veil over your face?

Corsets. Now, back off—corsets have gotten a bum rap. The nutty women who cinched their waists in to 18" were the anorexics of their day. Most women (and men, too!) used corsets for support and form, and they rarely took their waists in more than an inch, maybe two. And the older I get, the more I could use this: not one of those pansy-ass Victoria’s Secret “corsets,” but a real canvas-and-whalebone number.

How about you? What outdated fashions do you yearn to wear without garning Odd Looks? Straw boaters? Chainmail? Pointy jester shoes? Bustles?

Fitted tops with long floaty skirts - kind of rennaisance-y if you get what I mean…

Grunge. I’m scruffy anyway, and I’d like to be scruffy and in fashion at the same time. I like holes in my clothes and oversized army boots teamed with stripey tights and a girlie dress. I’d wear that every day if I could.

I’m in total agreement about hats with veils. It’s been years since I could wear mine anywhere!

I would like for shorter shorts to come back in style for men. One, I hate wearing “shorts” that fall below my knee and two, I like looking at guys’ legs. The shortest shorts I could find this year cut just at the knee. Still too long but not egregious.

Eve You must hang in the wrong circles. Corsets are de rigeur here in our gothic scene. So much so that they are also made for men. Which I can take or leave, but the women look fabulous in them. Veils are also kinda big. And Victorian clothing. Elegant and sexy all at once.

Makes me a happy boi

Flock of Seagulls hairstyle :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll generally take anything from the 80s.

Going back a bit more(quite a bit more) I’d like cloaks and large gothic robes to be an acceptable style. I think I would like to walk around calling myself ‘Count’ or some other formal title. (Duke, Lord, Baron).

I LOVED those stripey tights, if you’re talking about the ones that are the horizontal black/white ones. I have NEVER seen a woman look bad in those. A few years back, I was reduced to gibbering idiot status (although some would argue that’s not a long fall) by a pretty redhead in those and a black dress. OMG.

I’m fine with grunge coming back. I missed when “comfort” was the order of the day.

But, somewhere inside me a little man is screaming, “Z. Cavariccis were SO COMFORTABLE!!!”

I beat him back down. Little greasy bastard.

Nudity.

Happy Scrappy Hero Pup Once again: try the goth scene, you will see a lot of those tights (and arm warmers to match) making their appearances.

Hats. I’m a fan of hats and wear a fedora when the weather cools.

The only other people who wear similar-styled hats as I do are, oddly enough, Dopers.

Hats in general are what we need, especially a revival of the fedora, the homburg, and the porkpie.

I’ll testify in court that I didn’t see ** Gorgon Heap’s ** post before I posted!

Gorgon, it’s true…I do wear a fedora occasionally. I have a very comfortable and warm felt/wool one. Always great on a camping trip or a trip to Canada(it’s damn cold up there in the winter!)

Problem is, goths no longer dig me. Since the 90’s, I’ve gained 45 pounds of muscle (which still only puts me at 170, mind you, so I’m not a juicehead), and I’ve begun to dress a bit more mainstream. Checking out the goth scene would probably result in a hilarious reversal of the stereotypical high-school pecking order. But arm warmers= cool. As do fishnets. Especially if the skin is as pale as I like it (which is pretty damn pale).

And I do dig chokers (or even, occasionally, dog collars) on women. I remember when it was popular int he mainstream to have some kind of ribbon/pendant combo worn around the neck. I could go for seeing that again.

You know what else I thought was cool? In the late 80’s, we would “peg” (or French-rool, or tight-roll) the bottom of our jeans. We’d wear those with high-top sneakers (Reebok Pumps in my case) and an oversized (generally loud-patterned) button-down shirt, untucked. This WAS northern NJ, remember.

Getting dressed was a ritual, one I thouroughly enjoyed. At least, until I got exposed to a scene and lifestyle that fit me better. But hey, the memories are good ones. Does anyone else feel the same way?

the toga

Oh man I loved the French roll even well past the 80s

In high school our class used to have French Roll days in which we would all roll up our jeans.

The cowel neck.

Hmmm…I wear a hat (a black trilby, only in the winter of course) too. Maybe this is the secret Doper code!

I really like the 40’s style hair for women.

When the show Homefront was on, I LOVED how the ladies hair was. I’m not sure if there’s a name for the style. Gwen Stefani occasionally wears her hair that way. I’ll try to find some pics of what I’m talking about.

Loincloths would be nice. They’d certainly simplify doing the laundry.
