Fast food shame?

Not sure if you’d consider it fast food, but on that really special occasion, few things beat a Steak ‘n’ Shake double cheesburger, all the way, with cheese fries on the side and a strawberry shake.
Also the Arby’s Beef ‘n’ Cheddar is one of mankind’s greatest culinary creations.

Ohhhh, yes. Maybe once or twice a month, when I’m feeling stressed and cranky, I slip out and have lunch at Mickey D’s. I think it totally is a comfort food thing – I always order a regular hamburger and small fry, the same thing I’ve been eating at McDonald’s since I was younger.

And I sit in the back so nobody from work will see me if they walk by.

Man, I miss Taco Bell. :frowning:

I was just about to write this exact sentence. haha

Really? Then I guess pizza is too? I’ve never heard of that.

Once a year we take a long driving trip for a family vacation, and I’ll drive 30 minutes out of our way to go to Subway & avoid McD’s/Wendy’s/Burger King/Taco Bell/Arby’s/etc. I just can’t eat at those places; even the smell makes me sort of gaggy.

I’ll get a slice of pizza maybe 3-4 times a year.

If I order a pizza and have it delivered to my house, I wouldn’t think that would be considered fast food. It seems that the category shouldn’t change- either it is fast food or it isn’t, regardless of how & where you get it. If my friend brought a Happy Meal to my house for me, it would still be fast food, right?

Mmmmmmmm… Steak ‘n’ Shake… The food of the gods. One of the things that depressed me when I moved here is that there were more Steak ‘n’ Shakes back home in the City of St. Louis than there are in the entire State of Tennessee. I have to go to another state (Mississippi) to reach the closest one to me (there is one in Tennessee in the Memphis area, but I live closer to the MS one than the one in TN).

I’m rather fond of Arby’s Market Fresh Turkey, Bacon, and Ranch sandwich, myself.

Cheers,

It’s not quite junk, but I do pick up prepared foods while grocery shopping – hot soup, sub, quiche, whatever, for this very reason.

Well, if you’re ever headed up towads Kentucky on I-24, there is a Steak & Shake in Clarksville, TN.

As a teacher, I find fast food places useful for school trip meals. The food is cheap, the tables are clean and the kids like the food.

However since I first tasted a home-made hamburger, I’ve never been eaten fast food.

I love fast food, but avoid it for health and weight reasons.

The one place I indulge in fairly regularly is El Pollo Loco. I think that if I get the grilled breast meat pieces, and two sides consisting of salad and plain boiled pinto beans, it’s not too much of a sin. If I could just keep away from the flour tortillas and discipline myself not to eat the crispy grilled chicken skin!

I appreciate the help, but I’m in Memphis. Normally, I head north via I-55 to St. Louis, or to I-155 (if I’m headed into Western KY) or I-57 (if I’m headed into south-central IL or Chicago). If headed towards Louisville or Cincy it’d be I-40 to Nashville, then I-65 north. It’s rare that I’d head to Nashville and then hit I-24 north; anywhere I can reach that way I can reach quicker via I-55 to I-57, or I-55 to I-155.

But your post places you in Middle TN… Isn’t there a Steak ‘n’ Shake in the Nashville area?

Cheers,

bcg

Freddy the Pig isn’t fat?:dubious::smiley:

If there were some decent fast food places in walking distance of me, I sure would. But alas, I live in a “hip urban area”, so I can cook for myself, or frequent the mom and pop (and because of competition, decently priced) restaurants in my neighborhood. I do both.

I love fast food, and I’m not embarrassed to admit it. McDonald’s, Burger King, Chipotle, pizza (not fast-food pizza, though–the good stuff), Popeye’s Chicken…yeah, I eat it a fair bit, and I would have no issues with bringing it back to work. What do I care what other people think of what I eat? Besides, I can’t stand salads.

Right now I weigh more than I should and I need to get working on that again, but I used to go to Weight Watchers and I lost a lot of weight there…all the while still eating fast food several times a week. The trick was moderation. I had to cut back on some of the things I liked (small fries instead of medium at McDonald’s, for instance) but I’m a firm believer that the best way to sabotage a weight loss plan is to decide that you’re going to give up everything you enjoy eating.

Don’t like Taco Bell, though. Used to, a long time ago, but they’ve changed their cheese and their beans and now it tastes like plastic to me. This from a person who prefers things rather bland (and usually plain).

Oh, and I adore Steak and Shake. Which makes it a really good thing that the closest one is a very long way from me (I’m in California–the one I ate at was in Indianapolis). Oh, those malts with dollops of hot fudge in them are to die for, and the burgers and fries are good too. If we had one of those I’d be huge! I do miss Chick-Fil-A, though. None of those around here anymore either. Or Whataburger.

I stay away from it for the most part. But that’s not because I’m some tree hug’n health nut.

My mantra is: If you’re going to kill yourself; do it in style.

So I’d much rather go to The Black Eyed Pea and order the freakishly large chicken fried steak. (“So big it needs it’s own plate”) With enough white gravy to choke a horse.

I guess I eat fast food. I’m a grad student and don’t have a lot of spare time, so I often have lunch at the non-chain burrito place just down the street from my school. They are REALLY fast, and pretty tasty, too. I try to get the healthier things on the menu, though.

Back when I had a regular 9-5 job and spare time on the weekends and after work, I never ate fast food. I made a nice meal every Sunday and would bring slices of it in every day for lunch. And I never eat at typical fast food places, even now. (I’m a vegetarian, so this isn’t much of a hardship.)

From my current apartment, in less than 2 blocks I can reach Burger King, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Subway, Chipotle, Waffle Haus (technically not fast food, but still…), and a mall food court.

This location was absolutely not chosen by accident…

Larry Groce said it best in Junk Food Junkie:
Now folks, lately I have been spotted
With a Big Mac on my breath.

Stumbling to a Colonel Sanders
With a face as white a death.

In the daytime I’m Mr. Natural
Just as healthy as I can be.
But at night I’m a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me.*

I don’t eat a lot of fast food, but I am not ashamed of it when I do.

I went to BK for lunch today for their Big Fish sandwich 'cause I was craving fried fish.

I don’t do BK/McD’s/Wendy’s/Taco Bell often, maybe 3-4 times a year, but if we’re counting all order-at-the-counter restaurants, then probably once a week I go to Panera/Noodles/Cosi/kabob place/local chain Mexican place. Less unhealthy, non-fried food. But still not sit-down food.

Yes, good point- exactly what is Fast Food?

Is La Salsa (or similar) FF?

Buffet restaurants?

Salad bars?

I almost consider In&Out to be right on the borderline. Sure, it is a burger joint, and they fry, but there is all that fresh lettuce and tomato.

I am not sure I agree with **Harmonious Discord **about subs being FF.
Certainly FF=
McD, Wendy’s, BK, Tacobell, KFC, Popeye’s, Arby’s.

Borderline=
Subway
La Salsa
Quizos (some of their sandwichs certainly are but others?)
non-chain burrito place
El Pollo Loco

Time for my favorite fast food story.

We were having an all-day meeting at church. I did not want to do a pot luck, and I was sick of hot dish or pizza. Off I went to Taco Bell.

I made my way to the front of the line, looked at the woman behind the counter, and said, “I will have 10 Macho Grande meals, fifty bean burritos, twenty-five soft tacos, and twenty-five hard tacos.”

She looked at me without blinking an eye and said -

“Is that for here, or to go?”

I would have paid extra to find out if she was kidding.

Shodan
