As one who did a few projects with bariatric surgeons I know better than to post any information here. However, I advise the non-obese with questions about the incidence of conditions that subvert the ELEM method of weight loss to take advantage of medical journals online at your local library or, if you live in a city with a medical school, the medical school library. (You may have to sneak into a medical school library or, taking the moral high ground, ask for a guest pass.) This web site may be of some help http://www.naaso.org/obres/ - but as it studies obesity, the articles tend to be about the obsese as a group instead of obese as part of the general population.

Additionally, I see no reason why someone who is obese or morbidly obese would know more about the way the typical human body works. If suffering from a condition made one an expert, then my history of broken bones would gives me unique insight in orthopedic surgery.

I am not a nurse, nurses aid, or EMT. However, I do understand when nurses, nurses aids, and EMTs complain about dealing with people are obese, insane, or out of their minds on drugs or alcohol. Last year, friend of mine of the board of a charity hospital told me that a significant chunk of the hospital’s budget was diverted to buying furnishings and operating equipment suitable for treating the morbidly obsese. Any widespread health issue is a public health issue, whether it’s the health issues related to morbid obesity, skin cancer, or crack babies.

If any of the self-proclaimed “fatties” on this board are considering surgery, please be sure that your doctor has all the proper certifications and will allow you to talk to other patients about their expectations and the outcome. The field is filling up with hacks who, at the very least, may not properly evaluate your case and, worst case, may even do a poor job with your surgery.
