Well, yeah, actually you ARE an asshole. The object of your scorn may lose weight some day, but you will always be a dick-shaped life form.
Hate to break it to you, but we’re **all **dick-shaped life forms.
Well, except for the **particularly **obese.
[bolding and capitalization added]
Awesome Dopername.
Eeew…now I’m picturing actual dicks with arms and opposable thumbs and shit like that.
Back when /b/ was good (inb4 never good) I saw some much worse things. Things beyond words.
Or a Halloween costume!
Wow, you showed me! I hang my head in shame at your ridicule.
That fat shit will probably be dead in a year, so no, I don’t think IT, and it is an it, will lose weight.
Dick-shaped life form, is piece of wittiness supposed to make sense?
Nope…you can’t redeem yourself. Your’e still dick-shaped.
Shot From Guns – fine, I suppose we’ll have to disagree. I see it more as a support group, but then I have an aunt who’s a counselor, so I suppose I’m biased.
I Love Me, Vol. I, I appologize.
As for our good friend bri, well, that’s another story altogether. I’d rather be fat than be him.
So it’s all about “winning”, vs. the fighting ignorance stuff?
Nice try but no go.
This: “the basic science of how people get fat”
and this: “people’s obesity is because of their own choices”
Are not the same thing.
Stripping it down to the science, this is what is undeniably and inarguably true, and I very much doubt that very many, or even ANY Doper will deny it:
Living organisms require fuel. For mammals, it including us, it is in the form of protein, fat and carbohydrates. The body breaks down those components and does the following things with them:
-
uses it for energy
-
builds body tissues of all kinds
-
Stores it as a particular type of body tissue known as fat (that is not inert, contrary to long-held assumption, but is actually chemically and biologically active and interacts with the body in its own unique way, including with the brain).
-
eliminates it as waste in the form of urine and feces, primarily
A body that does not get enough food to be able to build tissues and fuel basic processes will (usually) go first to the specialized tissue known as fat to maintain those needs, and when those reserves are depleted it will turn to the other tissues of the body, and the various processes will shut down, starting with the least survival-oriented, like menstruation, eventually wasting away and dying.
Therefore the one absolutely irrefutably true thing about every single one of us is that if you take away enough food, we will lose weight because our body will draw from itself for energy.
That is the only perfectly certain and irrefutable truth, and frankly, I don’t think there’s even ONE person in this thread who would argue that it is not true.
Now, what YOU are doing is ignoring every single other thing that isn’t that particular scientific fact, starting with the most basic and fundamental questions: what is enough? What is too much? Is it the same for everyone? And the 99 other questions and uncertaintainties and differences that flow from there that make the answer to permanently undoing obesity for more difficult and complex than: “Stop eating so much, Moby.”
You seem very committed to the wisdom of science, and I am as well. So did you follow any of the links I provided? Did you take in any of the information about the science that underlies obesity? Because bariatric researchers, who really do know a little bit more than you, would tell you that it’s just a tad more complex than fat people being out of control for no good reason. There’s lots of good scientific reasons that obese people find it extraordinarily difficult (and not just “hard”) to persistently deny themselves to the degree necessary to prevent becoming obese ever again, starting with…wait for it….yes…. it’s coming…. Hold on to your hat….genetics!
But something tells me you aren’t here to have your ignorance fought, Shot. You’ve worked pretty hard to make it clear that you want to be right in your conviction that fat people could stop being fat if they weren’t so damn weak. All they have to do is eat less. And since that is the truth as you see it, you can feel perfectly justified in any judgmental attitude you have about fat people.
And since we all come here for our own reasons, that’s certainly your right.
So carry on….
Wow. bri… I want you to know that I feel for you. Seriously and truly. The depth and breadth of your own pain is clear, and I’m really sorry. I genuinely hope you find your way out of that soon.
Whoops, almost forgot…
If someone is an alcoholic, and they believe that they can only avoid drinking by worshipping the faeires that live in the dandelions on their lawn…what’s it to you? Why would you seek to disabuse them of that belief? What’s your gain? Isn’t the more important issue for them not to be drinking?
Really, you might want to stop and as yourself why you do things sometimes.
Well, one of these days bri is going to say the wrong thing to the wrong person…and I only wish I could be around when he does.
Alcoholism: when I said that people shouldn’t stop drinking on their own, I basically meant, you really SHOULD seek MEDICAL treatment first, as so you avoid going into withdrawal. Not necessarily twelve step programs.
Going cold turkey when you’re physically addicted to something = bad idea.
Cold turkey (on Wiki):
You know why I hate fat people? They’re lousy tippers. They think it’s okay to leave a 15% tip!
Well, there’s that, of course. I forgot about that.
For the past year I’ve worked with patients who are preparing for and having bariatric surgery. I guarantee you that the bariatric doctors (you know, those people who know a little bit more than you do) I’ve known would be less than happy with the picture you paint of the dim hope people have to take control of their weight. What bothers me most about your argument is that it gives the impression that it’s damned near impossible to fight genetics. Very, very wrong.
Oh I know there are many books written by those who are pandering to the fat acceptance movement that will tell you to give up because you can’t change it, but that is simply not true.
The reason so many people do not keep weight off is because they go back to their old habits. That is whether they’ve had a surgical procedure or not. The new eating/exercise habits have to be for a LIFETIME.
Regardless of how often you hear people talk about that person they know who can eat five cheeseburgers a day and not gain weight, that person is much like the 100 year old who smokes five packs of cigarettes a day. They are very rare. A woman I worked with used me as an example of someone who is “naturally thin” because as long as she’s known me I have been. I had to laugh and tell her that it’s because I do watch what I eat and I do workout every single day. While she’s sleeping in I’m doing an hour of high intensity cardio. All she sees is that I’m thin, not how I got there. After the eyeroll she gave me when I told her about working out and watching what I eat, I assume that I am still her example of naturally thin regardless of what the facts are.
Being “thin” isn’t something that everyone is interested in and that’s fine. Being healthier is something that almost everyone can do. Your sarcastic response to the previous poster doesn’t really outline what about genetics makes it so much harder for some people to lose weight and keep it off. "It’s genetics" is a great attention grabber, but exactly what about genetics are you referring to? Please be specific.
Also, it’s isn’t just about eating less. It’s about moving and being active. You can raise your metabolism with food and exercise. You can do things to improve your chances of being healthier. If you’re consuming a lot more than you’re burning, you’re going to gain weight. In that way, it is just that simple. Easy to do? Nope. Simple? Pretty much.
Yes, dear. It is about genetics. It is so clever of you to have figured that out–are you an attorney by chance? It is true that some people require less in the form of input to maintain their bodies, they have a slower metabolism. Still, the fact of the matter is that these people are eating more than they need. In other words their intake is greater than their expenditures. Is it fair? Nope. But it is still under their own control. Honestly. It is never easy, but it is more worthwhile to understand your body and its needs than to continually claim that it is just too hard while munching on the cheetoes.
I almost envy you. With no openings for complicated and messy realities to slip in, I’m sure that yours is a very peaceful and simple world that functions smoothly and surrounds you like a warm embrace.
Shut up right now.
On second thought, this might be fun.
“Genetics” seems to be the catchphrase of the moment, and too many people dismiss it entirely. I was and never have believed or felt or said that it’s all about genetics. That was just the complaint coming from others.
