Favorite B&B's

Okay, folks. Here’s a way to tell if our paths may have crossed in the past. Just see how long it takes for listings of Bed & Breakfast inns where we have stayed to produce at least one duplicate. Sort of the Six Degrees of Separation concept.

We have stayed at:

Newburgh House – Rugby TN
Windward House – Camden ME
Hartstone Inn – Camden ME
Lily Creek Lodge – Dahlonega GA
Hope Farm – Natchez MS
Beaufort House – Asheville NC
French Camp – French Camp MS

No hotels or motels, please.

Tavira Inn, Algarve, Portugal.

Hey, Z…since this is a poll, and it’d be quite a stretch to call vacationing an Art, I’m going to move this to IMHO for you.

Here’s a few I can remember off the top of my head…it’s been a while for us, as we have been Blest With Issue for over 13 years now, and most B&Bs aren’t really crazy about having kids in them.

Brook Farm Inn – Lenox, Mass.
1876 House – Oxford, Md.
MacCallum House – Mendocino, Calif.
Pentagoet Inn – Castine, Me.
Bear Creek – Pinos Altos, N.M.
2 Meeting Street – Charleston, S.C. (honeymooned here)

Much obliged, Ike. I was unsure of the “art” myself.

I didn’t include Indigo Inn in Charleston SC because it’s more of a motel than an inn, but they have it categorized as a B&B since they do serve a breakfast type spread like most motels do these days.

Anyway, we were there, too. Well located spot for the historic section.

Your others are far enough away from our travels not to have constituted a trail-crossing.

McMurphy’s, New Orleans, LA
Stayed there last year and going there again in a few weeks for our honeymoon!

Wait…not the same place as the B&B at 2 Meeting, right? I’m fairly sure that was just called “2 Meeting Street,” not the Indigo.

The joint I’m talking about is right at the corner of Meeting and the Battery, across the street from the public gardens.

Travel is TOO an art! At least, it ought to count if cooking does.

I’m not sure what differentiates a B&B from a pension or guesthouse; I’m assuming that it would have to be a small family-run place that includes breakfast, but frilly toilet paper roll covers are optional? Anyway, I’ve stayed in two places that I’m pretty sure would count:

Pension Bella, Kutna Hora, Czech Republic

137 Water Street, Stratford, Ontario (don’t think it has a proper name … run by a nice older Dutch couple named Reurink)

If places with dorm beds are allowed, you can throw in Petersburg Bunk & Breakfast, in Petersburg, AK.

Brigitte’s Bavarian B&B in Homer, Alaska: Sits on the side of a mountain overlooking Resurrection Bay. Veggies from her garden in every breakfast and husband Willie is an excellent cook and host. Nice cabin-style accommodations with decks.

Shit! Meant Kachemak Bay, not Resurrection.

The Inn at Walnut Bottom in Cumberland, MD.

College Crest Guest House in Galway, Ireland

And I cannot right now recall the name of a wonderful B & B in Stratford-Upon Avon, England and one on the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland.

Formule 1, France (partout)

Nuit d’Hotel, France (ditto)

Lafitte Guest House, New Orleans, LA.

Colesville Guest House, Peterborough, England
Glenview House, near Midleton, Co Cork

have stayed in a load of others, but don’t remember names

The Bunkhouse Lodge, Breckinridge, CO.

The Raven Haven–Mentone Alabama
Great accomodations, food, and lodging. Tony and Eleanor are wonderful hosts. Can’t wait to get back there.

I love the anonymity of the cold stark hotel room, prefer it actually. But one year for my husband’s birthday I rented a room in the Queen Victoria in Cape May, New Jersey. I fell in love with this place and we have plans to go back this fall.

Just remembered another. A great B & B in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a view of the castle: Castle View. A ton of Scottish breakfast. Walking distance to everything.

The Blue Dolphin Inn - Cambria, CA.

Falkland Arms, Great Tew, Oxfordshire

No, Ike, I’m sorry if I left the impression that Indigo and 2 Meeting were the same place. Indigo is on Meeting, catty-corner from that great seafood/deli place (Hyman’s?) where we ate almost every meal while we were in Charleston. Only there for three days on that trip, but went back last year for a longer stay and stayed in a motel. Saw Charleston and Savannah on the same trip (along with Beaufort and Asheville) with another couple.

My main point in replying to your post, Ike, was that we could conceivably have crossed trails in Charleston. Less likely in the other spots you mentioned.

Speaking of Hyman’s in Charleston, they have little brass plaques on virtually every table where famous people have sat. They make a point of letting you know your ass has touched the same wood as somebody famous. We talking serious trail crossing!
