The title really says it all: What is your favorite midnight movie? Rocky Horror Picture Show? The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert? Eraserhead? Something else?
I love RHPS and have seen it about 50 times but I loved when a local theater started showing great horror films at their midnight slot. The original Night of the Living Dead, Halloween, The Shining and others all made the rotation but The Exorcist was the best. The scares were fun but the audience made it entertaining by calling out lines and throwing peas or sprinkling “holy” water.
Our usual favourite is the Rocky Horror Pictuer Show although I do have to be careful in case 'im indoors goes looking for those stilettos that he wore last time we went to the show. He’s not too bad in them but he does tend to wobble a bit and combined with a few drinks, that’s not always good news!
Best I can do (because I’m an old coot with kids and never get to go to midnight movies) is Dungeons and Dragons - used to watch it whenever I sat up all night with a sick kid.
Geez, begrudge a workin’ man a little fun why doncha. Spoilsport.
RHPS is of course the standard. Combining it with its sequel, “Shock Treatment,” makes for a good double feature, since by the time ST starts it’s late enough that you don’t notice how weak it actually is and can focus on the great songs.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains,” which aired on Night Flight it seemed like every other weekend, is also a good choice. It was produced by Lou Adler of RHPS fame and stars Diane Lane as a pissed off teenage punk, with Laura Dern in a supporting role. That film NEEDS to be on DVD like, NOW.
Anything of the John Waters filmography up to and including “Polyester” but especially “Female Trouble” which, depsite “Pink Flamingos”’ greater notoriety, is the far superior film.
Another great midnight movie was Pink Floyd’s The Wall. The music is excellent and your level of enjoyment was determined by your blood alcohol content and/or the particular pharmaceuticals you were imbibing. Same for 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The Forbidden Zone - made by Richard Elfman, the first musical score by Danny Elfman (then of "The Mystical Knights of the Oingo Boingo, whose work making the movie turned them into Oingo Boingo), and featuring Susan Tyrell and Herve Villachez as the King and Queen of the 10th Dimension. Absolutely amazing, absolutely insane, and in a perfect world it would have a Rocky Horror-sized following.
I’ve never been to a “midnight movie”, but I think Phantasm has all the makings of a classic midnight camp. The tall man, orbs, and Jawa zombies, oh yea. Maybe include Bubba Ho-Tep from Coscarelli as a double feature.
