Favorite Romantic movie?

Have you seen her in Dirty Pretty Things? (Not a Valentine’s Day movie, but Tautou and Chiwetel Ejiofor turn in incredible performances.)

No, but I heard good things about it. She was very good in A Very Long Engagement, too (as was Jodie Foster, almost unrecognizable but speaking idiomatic French!).

I came in here to say L.A. Story which to me is a fairy tale set in the real world.

I’ll add Always, a fabulous movie and, coincidently, Audrey Hepburn’s last film.

Yeah my wife loves that one and Kiss Me Goodbye.

There are no romantic movies that I love, just some that I think are OK. I’ll sit through them with my wife, though, just to make her happy.

Moulin Rouge!
Breakfast at Tiffanys
Down with Love
Little Voice
Sense and Sensibility
A Life Less Ordinary
Nora
Titanic
Charade
Victoria and Albert (made for TV)

(Yes, I know most of them feature Ewan McGregor. Shut up)

Notting Hill

The Sleep triology (The Big Sleep, While you Were Sleeping, Sleepless in Seattle. Yeah two of these are lighthearted romantic comedies, and one is a classic noir, but you need three to have a trilogy - and I do own all three of them)

The Emma Thompson Sense and Sensability, the BBC Pride and Prejudice.

Shakespeare-lovers and DiCaprio-haters (my brother falls into the latter category) might want to lynch me for this, but I really dug the 1996 Romeo + Juliet.

I much prefer this version. My son said that his HS class watched both versions and while the girls all oohed and ahhed over Leo everyone agreed that the 1968 Zeffirelli version was a much better production.

Bridget Jones (the first one only)
My Beautiful Laundrette
Shakespeare in Love

A Room with a View. I’ve had a screen-capture of Lucy Honeychurch being kissed by George Emerson in the barley-field on my desktop all day today… and “O mio babbino caro” going through my head.

Also, along the same lines, Maurice. (but I don’t think I could get away with a screen-capture of Maurice kissing either Clive or Alec on my work computer. :))

Ah, I forgot about this one…

Did you know a remake is scheduled to be released this year?

No, I hadn’t heard. (Goes looking on IMDB…) You mean this? A Room with a View (TV Movie 2007) - IMDb

I see the screenplay is by Andrew Davies and it’s got several actors I like, so I will have to check it out when available.

I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Either that or Princess Bride. I’m not one for the mushy-mush usually, but those two get me.

Those who liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should check out The Science of Sleep, his next non-music movie after that.

It’s in my Netflix queue, but I’m a little apprehensive because I read some less-than-stellar reviews.

Those less-than-stellar reviews were written by people with no taste in movies.* The Science of Sleep happens to be the star of my DVD collection.

  •

Ooooh, how could I have forgotten Edward Scissorhands? Oooh, I love that movie. (I read Andrew Morton’s bio of Tom Cruise, and apparently, Cruise was up for the title role. Apparently though, he wanted a happy ending. Bleh)

Il Postino
Witness

and I second Moonstruck, The Big Easy, Crossing Delancy and several others mentioned previously.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, but I’ll add Stranger Than Fiction.

Notting Hill
Love Actually
Four Weddings and a Funeral (tho the “American Girl” being such a bit^H^H^H err… unsympathetic character undermines some of that for me).

On review… I’m noticing something of a Hugh Grant theme…
