Favorite TV commercials from your childhood

When I was a kid in the 70s there was another VD PSA that I used to sing all the time. It went “Veeee Deeee… gets around” and there was some bushy-haired guy with a backpack walking away. I remember my mother telling me to stop singing it and not knowing why, lol.

Another one I sang constantly was “I hanker for a hunk-a, a slab a slice a chunk-a, I hanker for a piece of cheeeese!”

Wash your hands after going to the bathroom
Wash your hands after changing baby too
Cause we don’t want to get hepatitis
And we don’t want hepatitis to get you
Who? You!

Have a Coke and a Smile, Mean Joe

I seem to be almost the only one who remembers:

Saturday night, Saturday night
go downtown, see the sites
girls and pinball, Coke in bright lights
wish everyday for Saturday night
Coca Cola adds life
When the lights are bright
Wish every day for Saturday night… and on

I thought I was very clever in reversing everything I could in that.

I miss Little Caesar’s – not so much for the pizza (although it was cheap), but because their ads were really, really funny (and often absurdist). I’m looking for my favorite, but here’s one that’s hilariously weird.

Man, that’s weird.

And then there was Schaefer Beer.

“Schaefer is the one beer to have when you’re having more than one.”

Oh, I just remembered the singing pills… "we’re not candy (believe us!), even though we look so fine and dandy, when you’re sick we come in handy BUT we’re not candy! (ooooh no!)

From the land of sky blue waters

It was actually the bear I liked in that commercial.

Someone upthread already mentioned the Nestle’s commercial with the puppet dog. I liked that one too, I think his name was Farfel(sp?)

Correct. Paul Winchell(v) and Jerry Mahoney, Farfel, as well as Mike Mahogany and Knucklehead.

It still cracks me up to hear the way Farfels mouth slams shut after the word “chock, late” (WHAP!)

.

Meet Cal Worthington, and his dog Spot!

Only, Spot was never a dog!

Oh, Cal Worthington is still a touchstone in So. Cal. I don’t see commercials much any more, but Wiki says he still appears sometimes in the tv commercials.

I can’t find the reference now, but Jimmy Nelson didn’t mean for that to happen. But everybody thought it was funny and they left it in.

Cool! I didn’t know that. Who is Jimmy Nelson? I always assumed Paul Winchell was the voice of Farfel.

.

Holy Cow! All my life I thought Paul Winchell, with Jerry Mahoney, Mike Mahogany, and Knucklehead, also included Farfel.

Moments ago I learned that the Nestle’s Quik commercials were Jimmy Nelson, with Danny O’Day and Farfel.

Possibly the most valuable knowledge I’ve gained from The Straight Dope.
.

Nope – again, there’s no semi-rotating creepy smiling puppet face at the end…also, IIRC, the commercial/PSA/whatever in question wasn’t animated, it was live…I could be wrong, though…
