Fingers crossed that this reporting is accurate. Trump and his whole sideshow circus are supposed to be in my town this weekend for the state GOP conference (Kari Lake, keynote speaker, ugh!). If he gets indicted while he’s here… delicious.
I haven’t seen this news about Mark Meadows show up anywhere else, either. Just that he spoke to the grand jury. And only news about Big Doofus this evening is that he has been notified that he’s a target in the documents investigation. Shocker!
And when nothing comes of it (because it’s a big old nothingburger), then they’ll scream about how Biden is a criminal who gets away with murder. This is the kind of thing Trump whines about when he claims he’s the target of a witch hunt. Which I’m sure we’ll be getting an extra dose of really soon, as indictments come out.
I have a question, and I apologize if it’s been addressed upthread.
If Trump is indicted, and all of this finally goes to trial, will it be televised? I can see arguments for either way, so I’m curious how it will pan out.
I’m not sure there’s much of a difference between possessing a classified document and a photocopy of a classified document.
Like the bailiff who let the door close in his face when he was in new York.
I’m wondering where he came up with 1,852 boxes. That’s a lot of boxes.
It also reminds me of the scene in the original Manchurian Candidate where James Gregory is complaining to Angela Lansbury about trying to remember how many communists there are supposed in the State Department as he dumps ketchup onto his eggs. Quick cut-- “There are 52 known communists in the State Department!”
NY Times is being more circumspect about this story:
Federal prosecutors have informed the legal team for former President Donald J. Trump that he is a target of their investigation into his handling of classified documents after he left office, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The notification to Mr. Trump’s team by prosecutors from the office of the special counsel, Jack Smith, was the clearest signal yet that the former president is likely to face charges in the investigation.
It remained unclear when Mr. Trump’s team was told that he was a target of the special counsel’s inquiry, but the notice suggested that prosecutors working for Mr. Smith had largely completed their investigation and were moving toward bringing an indictment.
It’s all about “signals” and “suggestions.” They are saying an indictment seems likely, but not saying definite, not saying when of course, and nothing at all about Meadows (sadly).
It seems to me that Meadows would be way more involved with the Jan 6 investigation than the documents case. Did the article at The Independent specify which one the supposed plea deal involved?
