FBI Search and Seizure at Trump's Mar-A-Lago Residence, August 8, 2022, Case Dismissed July 15, 2024

Moderating:

I didn’t include you in the mod note above because you were the first person who commented on Trump’s claim of being a “legitimate” person, and a mere comment isn’t a hijack. But there are a whole lot of posts indicating that this became a hijack. Drop it now, and please catch up with the mod notes in the thread since your last post.

Yeah, I was about to edit that out when your reply showed up. I hadn’t seen the mod note yet when I posted.

oops!

Well, now, this is interesting:

Huh. No idea what the error code is about. First time for everything, I guess.

Anyway, the gist is as follows:

Three weeks after former President Donald J. Trump was indicted on charges of illegally retaining national security records and obstructing the government’s efforts to reclaim them, a federal grand jury in Miami is still investigating aspects of the case, according to people familiar with the matter.

In recent days, the grand jury has issued subpoenas to a handful of people who are connected to the inquiry, those familiar with it said. While it remains unclear who received the subpoenas and the kind of information prosecutors were seeking to obtain, it is clear that the grand jury has stayed active and that investigators are digging even after a 38-count indictment was issued this month against Mr. Trump and a co-defendant, Walt Nauta, one of his personal aides.

I also found the following particularly fascinating:

Several of Mr. Trump’s aides and advisers appeared in the indictment, identified only as Trump Employee 1 or similar descriptions. In one episode, the indictment recounted how Mr. Trump displayed a classified map to someone described as “a representative of his political action committee” during a meeting in August or September 2021 at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J.

The representative of the PAC was Susie Wiles, one of the top advisers for Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign, according to two people briefed on the matter. A Trump spokesman declined to comment.

Ms. Wiles’s appearance in the indictment was reported earlier by ABC News.

The fact that Ms. Wiles could become a prosecution witness should Mr. Trump’s case go to trial, even as she is helping run his third bid for office, underscores the complexities that the former president now faces as he deals with both a presidential campaign and a criminal defense with an overlapping cast of characters.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the department has made preparations to bring what is known as a “superseding indictment” — a second set of charges against an already-indicted defendant that could include more serious crimes — against the ex-president in the Southern District of Florida.

But prosecutors may also choose to bring additional charges against Mr Trump in a different venue, depending on how they feel the case they have brought against him in is proceeding.

The Independent understands that prosecutors’ decision on whether to seek additional charges from a grand jury — and where to seek them — will depend in part on whether they feel the Trump-appointed district judge overseeing the case against him in the Southern District of Florida, Aileen Cannon, is giving undue deference to the twice-impeached, now twice-indicted former president.

Great catch!

I’m not surprised about the possible new case in another venue based on Cannon’s deference to Trump. But the superseding indictment in Florida is interesting and big news.

I didn’t see anyone comment on this, but Trump finally thought of an excuse for the audio recording of him sharing classified war plans: he wasn’t really showing the plans, he was lying about the document:

The news and opinion sites have focused on the obvious implausibility of this sudden excuse.

But ISTM it doesn’t even matter.
Think about it: the FBI know what secrets Trump had in his possession. If he was telling those sycophants correct things from a real document, what does it matter if he’s pointing at The Hungry Caterpillar while speaking?

Wouldnt the people in the room that he was showing them to be able to testify as to what they actually saw?

Yes, and that’s one of the main reasons that most analysts think this is a joke of a defence.

But, like I say, I don’t think we even need to get to that level. Imagine I have a document containing the identities of american spies. And then I divulge that information to some randos while holding a cocktail napkin that I say is the document I got the names from.
Am I innocent of espionage?

Also, the tape shows that he knows that he wasn’t allowed to have classified documents (because he says he’s not allowed to have them). Other, independent, evidence shows that he did have classified documents. Even if those weren’t the same documents, it still adds up to him keeping documents he knew he wasn’t allowed to keep.

You’re going to love this… they describe the document they saw in Mark Meadows book.

“The president recalls a four-page report typed up by Mark Milley himself,” Meadows’ book says, referring to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. “It contained the general’s own plan to attack Iran, deploying massive numbers of troops, something he urged President Trump to do more than once during his presidency. President Trump denied those requests every time.”

I have a hard time believing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff types his own battle plans.

This excuse is purely for politics in the media. If this defense ever sees the inside of a courtroom I will eat a fistful of carpenter ants.

If it works I’ll eat a fistful of fire ants.

Well it’s a puzzle for the ages what his defence could possibly be following that recording. Even insanity doesn’t work.

All he can do is try to run down the clock and hope he’s president.

Or dead.

Not that. The world only exists while Trump is alive. I’d hate to cease to exist!

How about:

The buck stops here - Truman

I take no responsibility at all - Trump

Hey, I resemble that joke…
