FBI Search and Seizure at Trump's Mar-A-Lago Residence, August 8, 2022, Case Dismissed July 15, 2024

I see that as a terrible scenario, the delays. But if it is so, at least Republicans will have solid proof that there is, in fact, a two tiered system of justice in America.

I agree it really does sucketh if it goes this way. But I think it’s her only plausible way forward if she wants to give him an assist (and I think she does).

If she grants a continuance that’s open ended or too far out, Smith will appeal to try and kick her off the case.

On the bright side, I think Smith foresaw this possibility and that’s why Bedminster lurks in the background. If charges are brought there, they may be even more serious than the ones in Florida.

And that’s before we even get to what could happen with the election interference/Jan 6th stuff, which indictments I believe will be brought before the end of this month – but that’s for a different thread.

I think the money in Russian banks is all that was needed. Putin told Trump, either directly or got a message to him, saying “If you come to me in friendship the loans are safe”. And Trump kissed his ring and said, “Be my friend. Godfather.”

That’s what I think, too.

Some new news on the documents case: Sounds like a superseding indictment is coming soon. It may include additional charges for documents moved to Trump’s other golf clubs in Florida: Doral and Jupiter. It could also include Bedminster.

I’ll post a link when I find one.

And that will matter to them because…?

If true, this would be a legit reason to ask for more time. New charges, new evidence, etc. for defense to review and go over.

This is a very good move, not only does it hopefully give a lying Trumpist scum sucker his just desserts, it far more importantly it might encourage other such witnesses to not try to lie their way out of diffiuclt questions.

Gift link.

“Other defendants might get in trouble for publicly calling the prosecutor a deranged drug user. Not Donald Trump.”

Since his indictment last month on charges of withholding classified documents, former president Donald Trump has publicly called special counsel Jack Smith “deranged” and a “psycho” and said he “looks like a crackhead.”

In response, Smith and the federal judge overseeing his pending criminal trial have said … nothing.

Trump’s broadsides on social media against the Justice Department, the FBI, and Smith in particular have not gone unnoticed. The government spent $1.9 million for U.S. Marshals to provide security to Smith and other officials between November 2022 and March, according to officials. Experts and government officials have said individual prosecutors are facing harassment and threats online from members of right-wing extremist groups.

In the Trump case, White said, there are reasons why Smith and Cannon — who will preside over the first pretrial hearing in the case on Tuesday in Fort Pierce, Fla. — may decide not to raise the issue.

“Trump is likely trying to provoke a legal battle so he can portray himself as a victim of censorship as well as government abuse,” White said. “He wants that to be the narrative, to fundraise and make himself the victim. Smart judges avoid unnecessary fights and don’t want to be trolled.”

IOW a gag order would play into trump’s (tiny) hands, so let’s don’t give him one.

You have the right to remain silent. If you give up this right, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law…

Why stop him from saying things? They’re just letting that rope play out and waiting for trump to hang himself with it. He admits to allegations all the time as he whines about how unfair is for people to try to hold him accountable. Plus, he has a habit of accusing others of things he himself has done. You know Smith and team are paying close attention.

Has Tiny Hands said anything negative about Judge Cannon yet? He’s too stupid and egocentric not to if she makes any rulings that don’t favor him. I wonder if she’s watching how he attacks Smith and reconsidering her previous attempts to cater to him. Or perhaps planning to protect herself by catering even more slavishly.

Yep. Trump is trying desperately to make this all personal, a battle between him on one side, and Crazy Anti-Trump Jack Smith on the other. Responding in kind just plays to Trump’s strengths.

Smith needs to keep it hands-off, to emphasize that it’s not personal. That this is the normal mechanism of the DoJ going through the numbers in just another criminal prosecution.

If Trump does say something that crosses the line into criminality, well, that shit is all on the record, and the DoJ can charge him with those crimes at a later date.

I’m surprised it took this long. There are only two types of authority figures for Trump: those who have betrayed him (deranged lunatics, haters, etc) and those who have yet to betray him (very strong heroes who will 'do what’s right wink wink").

Unless Judge Cannon rules 100% of the time in favor of DJT I doubt he will stay so adoring. Depending on the gravity of any ruling that goes against him the tone of his comments about the judge will undoubtedly change. While most posters here feel she is totally in the bag for 45 I’m not entirely convinced. Cannon was already smacked down twice by the higher court so I think there is a good chance she may not want to be seen as his protector. That and the fact I strongly believe Jack Smith knows what he’s doing make me pretty sure this isn’t going to play out the way Trump and his team expect.

Reading the WaPo article, a gag order is needed if Trump starts talking about inadmissible evidence, trying to get it to potential jurors. Does anyone have an opinion on what inadmissible evidence, favorable-to-Trump, could look like?

I hope you’re right. I still fear that the clock is simply going to run out before the election. That’s just cutting it too fucking close.

I say let him run for president. I think he would get another dose of reality.

He’s immune to reality.

Looks like the kid who released all the classified documents on Discord is citing trump and Nauta’s treatment pre-trial and is asking to be released pending trial. He is currently being held in jail pending trial.

“Teixeira’s lawyers noted that prosecutors did not seek to detain Trump — or his co-defendant, Walt Nauta — even though the former president and his valet “possess extraordinary means to flee the United States.””

Hmmm, and WHO keeps saying he’s being treated unfairly by a “two-tiered justice system”.

I think that jailing people who have not been convicted is terrible. With repeat violent offenders, and the most violent first time offenders, I’m afraid there is little choice. But it is a violation of liberal principles (and should result in a undelayed trial).

As for accused criminals fleeing the country, I would generally see this as a sign of guilt, so good riddance. It would most concern me if I thought some violent criminal would continue their rampage overseas. Not a factor here.

Unfortunately, Donald Trump has very strong family and political ties to the United States. He is going nowhere.

Trump would leave his family here in a minute if he really had to flee the country. The campaign would be the only reason to stay, so you’re right there.
