FBI Search and Seizure at Trump's Mar-A-Lago Residence, August 8, 2022, Case Dismissed July 15, 2024

My advice would be “nothing until it’s reported by a more reliable source than the Washington Examiner and a guy who works for Loser Donald’s PAC”.

Or reverse those…

Thus the emphatic disclaimer

I think it’s entirely possible that he does not know what a passport looks like, and is only vaguely familiar with what they are in the first place.

“Don’t need this. I never go to ports. I can fly anywhere I want.”

IMO, the passport story was planted as a diversion.
Use up some oxygen. Buy some time.
Seems to be working.

He could have made it up.

But I believe the FBI promptly gives seized passports to the State Department. So, literally, of course the FBI couldn’t have Trump’s U.S. passports. And a tweet like that is not the same as a CBS news report which went through an editorial process.

It seems the passport story is a nothing burger.

There apparently were three of Trump’s passports that were taken when the warrant was executed. Two expired ones and his diplomatic one (which perhaps not expired, but not currently valid?). These were found by an independent team (i.e., not part of either the investigation team or the team that seized the documents) going through the collected materials. The DOJ notified Trump’s lawyers of this, saying they could pick them up after 2:00 PM (EDT) on 8/15/22. It is also apparently obvious that Trump did not know the passports were missing until this notification, or which ones were taken.

I call it a nothing burger because all it really shows is that when dozens of boxes of documents are seized in the execution of a search warrant that it is possible that some things that were not intended to be covered by the warrant to get inadvertently seized. All this sideshow illustrates is that the DOJ has effective procedures for handling these situations without compromising the validity of the warrant.

I think it would be harder for Trump to flee the country that people are imagining. It’s true that it’s up his destination if they’ll admit him without a passport, but how’s he going to sneak out of the country? He has a Secret Service detail and his location is constantly monitored. He’d either have to dismiss them or sneak away without them noticing. Then he has to get to a plane (not his own, too obvious), and take off without anybody knowing he’s on it (or else the USAF) would be after. Then he needs to fly all the way to Russia (I don’t see anyone else giving him asylum, maybe NorthKorea) without stopping to refuel (once he’s on a tarmac he’s at the mercy of the local authorities) whole avoiding all of North American (or even NATO) airspace. I think any attempt to flee would end in failure (unless of course Putin sneaks him on a submarine off the Florida coast). :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I don’t doubt your well written post, but I would humbly request your source for this so I can follow the dialog.
We are witnessing history.

Moderating:

Ok, I know it’s an understandable hijack to go from discussion about the potential seizure of Trump’s passports, which is legitimate discussion for this thread, to The Great Escape, which is not. So let’s foreclose this discussion at this point. I encourage those who wish to discuss the mechanics of how an escape would unfold to start a new thread. Thanks.

I’ve been called out twice in a single thread.
I do appreciate this forum, and all the excellent information freely given by SMEs.
But I don’t feel welcome as a member here.
Lurked for 10+ years.
It took some courage for me to start posting.
I realize that new people have to prove themselves here or face the wrath.
Having said that Aspenglow, I don’t have any hard feelings about it.
This is still a great forum.

@Ssounder, I didn’t call you out. I wasn’t calling anyone out. I made a general mod note to anyone and everyone who may wish to discuss this matter at greater length. Such a discussion doesn’t belong in the thread about the search and seizure, however.

I went out of my way to say I can understand how the escape discussion grew out of the passport discussion. I don’t know how to invite people to carry on their discussion in another thread in a nicer way than that. There is no “wrath.”

Hijacks are a big problem in P&E. I try to head them off at the pass when I see them. I don’t always see them.

I welcome you as a new poster and hope you continue to post. Please do be mindful of what a thread topic is about, and we won’t have any problems at all.

Just putting puzzle pieces together.
What tied it together for me was this tweet from Kyle Cheney:

Assuming on my part that nothing Trump says is the whole truth. One of Trump’s guiding principles is never tell the truth. They can’t use lies against you. If you are ever forced to tell the truth, take the fifth.

Anyway, if I am wrong, I want to be called out. I think, in this case, I nailed it. This is just the kind of hijack that Trump and his blogosphere love to shout from the rooftops, so it makes sense to me. I suspect when the facts come to light they will support my hypothesis.

Yes, and the passports are probably not the only thing in those boxes that will be returned. It’s likely that whoever packed those boxes when Trump was leaving the WH just took everything from his desk or some other place, which are likely a mixture of government documents and personal documents. Passports are distinctive, so they’re immediately recognizable as not being what the search warrant was intended for. Other documents will have to be examined more carefully, but they’ll eventually find some that need to be returned.

I appreciate your kind words. Also your legal expertise.
FWIW I consider this form to have some of the best moderation in the business.
Couple that with a lot of smart people and it keeps me reading.
Out of my league really, but sometimes it bekcons me to engage.

Thank you. There are lawyers here who possess far greater legal expertise than me, and IANAL. But I have spent a lot of time in the legal field and particularly in courtrooms, so it’s an area where I feel qualified to contribute and remain highly interested.

Thank you again, and I felt that way when I joined the forum and participated solely as a poster before becoming a mod. I always try to live up to the standards set those who have gone before. I’m not always successful, but I do try.

Nah, you’re not out of anyone’s league here. If the subject interests you, by all means contribute. Even start a thread, if you wish! If it’s in one of the forums to which I’m assigned, I won’t let posters hijack your threads, either.

Now… let’s not hijack this thread further.

Agreed.
Thanks.

Is it just me, or is Trump verbally flailing more than usual? (Which is saying a lot.)

I feel like he’s actually scared over this one, in a way he hasn’t before through all the other scandals he skated past. Including not one, but two impeachments.

What the heck was in those boxes?!

I feel he’s nudged himself past the apex, and is finally starting the quickly accelerating downhill slide.

I will be smiling his whole trip down.
